Director Ava DuVernay has been spotted at the Democratic National Convention this week, working on a secret project related to the event, according to a source with knowledge speaking to CNN.
While details about the project are limited, the source revealed that DuVernay is directing the filming at the DNC this week. However, the project will not be part of the convention’s programming.
On Tuesday night, DuVernay was seen on the DNC floor and backstage with former President Barack Obama and Eva Longoria, as documented on her Instagram Story.
As one of the most prominent Black female directors in Hollywood, DuVernay’s work often focuses on Black leaders, activism, slavery, and racism. She gained recognition for her film “Selma,” based on the 1965 voting rights marches led by Martin Luther King Jr., and her documentary “13th.”
In addition to her film work, DuVernay is known for her collaboration with Oprah Winfrey, who is also a speaker at the DNC. DuVernay created the series “Queen Sugar” on Winfrey’s OWN network, where she made a point to hire female directors for every episode to support women in the entertainment industry.
DuVernay has also been vocal in her support for political figures like Kamala Harris and Barack Obama, participating in events and conversations related to police reform, activism, and racial justice.
