Eva Longoria Exits ‘Dystopian’ US: Family Splits Time Between Mexico and Spain Amid Political Turmoil

In a recent conversation with French magazine Marie Claire, renowned Hollywood actress Eva Longoria disclosed that her family has significantly altered their living arrangements and is currently dividing their time between Mexico and Spain. This decision to leave the United States stems from her perceived deterioration of the nation’s social climate, particularly post-Covid-19 pandemic. Longoria highlighted pressing issues such as growing homelessness, burdensome taxation in California, and the alarming prospect of Donald Trump’s re-election as key reasons for their relocation.

Longoria expressed her awareness of her privileges, recognizing that her option to relocate is not accessible to most Americans. She poignantly noted that many are “going to be stuck in this dystopian country,” underscoring her concerns about the current state of the United States. As one of the figures from “Desperate Housewives,” she has not only become an acclaimed actress but also a significant player in the realm of Democratic politics, especially for women and the Latino community.

Since at least 2012, Longoria has actively engaged in promoting immigration policy and has been an outspoken advocate for Democratic candidates. Notably, she played a pivotal role during the Democratic National Convention and took to the campaign trail on behalf of Kamala Harris, emphasizing her support by reinterpreting Barack Obama’s famous “Yes, we can” mantra into a more culturally resonant phrase in Spanish – “She se puede.” Such engagement reflects her commitment to furthering Democratic ideals and advocating for the rights and representation of marginalized communities.

The timing of her interview coincided with her feelings of dejection following Donald Trump’s recent win over Kamala Harris, as she expressed concern that if Trump remains true to his campaign promises, it would lead to troubling developments in the nation. Reflecting on her personal journey, Longoria admitted that Trump’s victory in 2016 shattered her belief in the meritocratic notion that “the best person wins” in politics.

After years of establishing her life in Los Angeles, Longoria voiced that this chapter in her life has concluded, marking a disheartening transition. With her work increasingly taking her abroad, she finds herself frequently traveling to Europe and South America. Longoria hails from a long lineage in Texas, being a ninth-generation Texan, but made the move to California during her twenties in pursuit of her acting career. Her portrayal of Gabrielle Solis in “Desperate Housewives” earned her a Golden Globe nomination in 2006, solidifying her reputation in the entertainment industry.

In more recent endeavors, she has taken the center stage by hosting CNN’s mini-series “Searching for Mexico” and “Searching for Spain,” which showcases her interest in cultural exploration. Longoria’s personal life is also intertwined with her multifaceted identity as she is currently married to José “Pepe” Bastón, who is the president of the Mexican broadcaster Televisa and her third husband. Together, they share a six-year-old son named Santiago, and Bastón also parents three other children from a previous marriage.

With her extensive background in both the entertainment and political spheres, Eva Longoria’s departure from living in the United States signifies a broader commentary on shifting perspectives surrounding the political climate and social issues within the country. Her move is emblematic of those grappling with the implications of national policies and the challenges faced by the broader populace in a rapidly evolving society.
