Mark Allen Powers through Hard-Fought Battle to Secure Last 16 Spot at UK Championship

Mark Allen emerged victorious in a gritty encounter against Jackson Page, clinching the match with a score of 6-4 in the ongoing UK Championship. This victory propelled Allen into the last 16 stage of the tournament, a positive sign amidst an otherwise challenging 2024/25 season for him. Despite beginning the season as the world No. 1, his track record has been lackluster, with only two semi-final appearances so far. The match took place in the historic Barbican Centre in York, a venue renowned for hosting significant snooker events. However, the overall quality of play was somewhat disappointing, with Allen’s highest break being a modest 56.

Throughout the match, Allen exhibited frustration on multiple occasions, showing visible displeasure with his control over the cue ball. Nonetheless, he managed to grind out a win, staying in contention for what would be his second UK Championship title. The tournament can be viewed live on discovery+, allowing fans to follow the action as it unfolds. The contest started somewhat evenly, with both players sharing the first two frames. Page claimed the opening frame despite a reckless attempt at breaking the pack, which resulted in a crash into the blue ball. Allen retaliated by taking the second, followed by a difficult third frame that required careful maneuvering.

The fourth frame was pivotal, as Page seemed on track to claim it swiftly, having built a score of 56. However, a misstep in his play allowed Allen to fight back, leading to a tie as they entered the interval. Following the break, Page initially gained momentum but faced challenges, taking more time than anticipated to secure the fifth frame. Even after crafting an impressive break of 76, Page missed a critical red ball that left the door open for Allen to respond. The match continued in a similarly low-scoring fashion, with players exhibiting defensive play rather than aggressive potting.

Allen’s strengths lay in his ability to engage in long, drawn-out frames, which became evident in the sixth frame where he outlasted Page in an intricate safety battle. He eventually seized the moment, crafting a strategic break that secured the frame for him after a grueling 35 minutes. While his safety play was commendably robust, his potting remained inconsistent, leading to a perplexing choice not to go for a mid-range blue in the seventh frame. This brash decision, however, turned in his favor when Page, under pressure, left a red that enabled Allen to take the lead.

The match’s intensity peaked during the eighth frame, where Allen demonstrated his best form. Although a series of unfortunate splits prevented him from sealing the match with a single visit, he returned to the table with a brilliant red and managed to accumulate a break of 45, inching closer to victory. Yet, Page’s tenacity was apparent, as he bounced back in the ninth frame despite earlier setbacks. While Allen briefly faltered, Page rediscovered his form, particularly highlighted by an impressive yellow to the green pocket.

In the tenth frame, Page began strong, aiming to push the match into a decider. Unfortunately, his failure to effectively break apart a cluster of balls left him vulnerable. Conversely, Allen capitalized on a crucial opportunity by executing a break of 42. However, the tension mounted as Allen misplayed a red, prolonging the encounter. Both players ultimately found themselves in a thrilling contest for the colors, with Allen managing to keep his composure to pot several crucial shots, including a remarkable brown.

With his victory secured, Allen now prepares to face the winner of the match between Si Jiahui and Wu Yize in the next round. In the afternoon’s other notable match, Ali Carter also secured a 6-4 victory over Ryan Day. Carter’s impressive performance included a stellar opening break of 75 and additional runs of 63 and 99, underscoring his readiness as he advances into the last 16.

For snooker enthusiasts, the matches are available for streaming on discovery+, providing ample opportunity to witness the high-stakes action of the UK Championship live and on demand. The intense competition and nail-biting finishes highlight the enduring appeal of the sport, captivating audiences across the globe.
