Disabled Man Wrongfully Ejected from Concert: “I Wasn’t Drunk, Just Unfortunate

In a troubling incident at The O2 Arena in London, a 48-year-old disabled man named Matthew Parrott found himself unceremoniously removed from a concert after venue staff mistook his medical condition for intoxication. Accompanied by his wife, Beth, Mr. Parrott attended the sold-out performance by the popular band Glass Animals on November 7, only to miss the headline act due to an unfortunate misunderstanding revolving around his medical condition.

Mr. Parrott, who resides in Oxford, has faced ongoing health challenges, having battled lymphoma—a form of blood cancer—since 2007. His struggles intensified three years ago when he underwent a bone marrow transplant. As a consequence of the transplant, he developed graft-versus-host disease, which affects his immune system and causes nerve damage in his feet, resulting in difficulty balancing and walking. During the concert, Mr. Parrott experienced a fall, which he attributed to this pre-existing condition rather than alcohol consumption. However, venue security misjudged his stumbling gait as a sign of inebriation rather than recognizing it as a symptom of his disability.

During an interview on the BBC Radio 4 program *You and Yours*, Mr. Parrott recounted the incident when he was approached by the venue’s security team following his medical evaluation. He explained that despite his attempts to clarify that his lack of balance was related to his medical condition rather than alcohol, he and his wife were ultimately escorted out of the venue, preventing them from enjoying the concert they had been looking forward to.

Mr. Parrott noted that he had consumed only three beers over a span of four and a half hours—an amount he argued would not impair someone. Moreover, he pointed out that his wife had consumed the same quantity, yet she was not subjected to the same scrutiny. He expressed disappointment over initially being denied a reimbursement for their tickets, which totaled £157.70.

Fortunately, after the incident gained media attention, The O2 took steps to address Mr. Parrott’s concerns. Following direct communication from their team, he ultimately received a full refund for the tickets, as well as complimentary tickets and drink vouchers for an event of his choice in the future. In a statement, The O2 Arena extended their apologies and emphasized their commitment to reviewing their staff training procedures. They asserted their ambition to foster an inclusive environment for all patrons, particularly those with disabilities.

As a broader commentary on the event, Mr. Parrott encouraged others who feel they have suffered similar injustices to speak out. He reflected that confronting an institution like The O2 can evoke feelings of helplessness, leaving individuals reluctant to voice their grievances. He expressed hope that sharing his experience might encourage others facing discrimination due to their disabilities to come forward and address such issues.

In support of Mr. Parrott’s narrative, the charity Attitude is Everything, which actively campaigns for better access for disabled attendees at music venues, voiced their concern regarding the incident. They have pledged to reach out to event organizers for clarity on the steps being taken to prevent similar situations in the future.

The O2 Arena, recognized by Attitude is Everything for its accessibility measures, now faces the critical task of reviewing and improving its protocols to ensure such misunderstandings do not detract from the experiences of disabled concert-goers in the future. As discussions continue, it’s vital for venues to balance their concerns over health and safety with a compassionate understanding of the diverse needs of their audience members.
