PSG Clinches 2024/25 Ligue 1 Title with Six Games to Spare, Eyes Historic Unbeaten Season

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has clinched the 2024/25 Ligue 1 title with remarkable efficiency, having accomplished this feat with six matches still remaining in the season. This significant achievement was finalized on a Saturday during a match against Angers, where a single second-half goal from Desire Doue secured a 1-0 victory. With this result, it has become mathematically impossible for the second-placed team, AS Monaco, to catch up, as they currently trail PSG by a staggering 24 points with just seven games left to play in the league.

Under the stewardship of manager Luis Enrique, PSG is gearing up for what could be an extraordinary season, as they remain unbeaten in the league and are actively pursuing additional trophies in both the UEFA Champions League and the Coupe de France. This year marks a historic achievement for PSG, as they extend their record to an impressive 13 Ligue 1 titles, making it their fourth consecutive championship victory.

Key players have been instrumental in this success. Ousmane Dembélé has emerged as a crucial asset for the team, leading the scoring charts with an outstanding 21 goals throughout the league campaign. Meanwhile, Bradley Barcola has proven to be the ultimate creator for PSG, contributing 10 vital assists. The importance of these players cannot be overstated; their performance has played a significant role in PSG’s dominance in the league this season.

The timing of PSG’s title victory is notable and rare. This marks only the third occasion in Ligue 1 history that a title has been secured with so many matches still to play. Previously, PSG themselves achieved a similar feat in the 2015/16 season, wrapping up the championship with eight games remaining. Another record-holder, Olympique Lyonnais, secured their title in the 2006/07 season with six games left on the schedule, according to reports from the BBC. Furthermore, the only other French team to claim the title earlier than PSG did this season was the PSG squad of 2016, which notably clinched it by mid-March.

Moreover, Luis Enrique’s squad is also on the verge of breaking records, as they have gone 28 Ligue 1 matches without a loss, boasting a record of 23 wins and 5 draws. This remarkable unbeaten streak places them only four games shy of Nantes’ record of 32 consecutive matches without a loss from the start of the 1994/95 season. If PSG can manage to maintain their unbeaten run for the remainder of the season, they would distinguish themselves as the first French club to achieve such a remarkable feat, joining an elite group of teams from Europe’s top leagues that have managed to complete a season unbeaten, such as Bayer Leverkusen in 2024, Juventus in 2012, Arsenal in 2004, AC Milan in 1992, Perugia in 1979, and Preston North End in 1889.

Last season, Enrique led PSG to a domestic treble, winning not only the Ligue 1 title but also lifting the Coupe de France trophy and the Trophee des Champions. He has a chance to replicate this success if PSG can triumph over Reims in the upcoming Coupe de France final scheduled for May 24.

However, the immediate focus for PSG is the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, where they will face Aston Villa. The first leg of this touted matchup will take place in Paris on April 9, followed by the return leg at Villa Park on April 15. Historically, PSG has yet to secure a Champions League victory, although they have reached the semi-finals in the previous year and were runners-up during the 2019/20 season. The only significant piece of European silverware to date for the club is the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, which they won in the 1995/96 season.

Fans can witness the high-stakes clashes of the UEFA Champions League live through TNT Sports and discovery+, heightening the anticipation surrounding PSG’s campaign as they aim for more than just domestic glory this season.
