The Economist is hiring a writer on economics to join their team in London. While journalistic experience is not necessary, the ability to write clearly and entertainingly, along with a thorough understanding of economics and data analysis, are crucial. The ideal candidate would have an interest in the economics of innovation and technology, but this is not a requirement. The writer will be expected to produce original and striking journalism that is capable of holding the cover of The Economist, as well as contribute to the newspaper’s “Free exchange” column. Additionally, they will be expected to appear on podcasts and films, showcasing their expertise in the field of economics.

Applicants interested in the position should send a CV and a sample article, suitable for publication in The Economist, to [email protected]. The sample article should be unpublished and no longer than 700 words. The deadline for submissions is May 14th. The ability to write clearly, concisely, and engagingly is essential, as well as a strong grasp of economic concepts and trends.

Some examples of relevant coverage that potential candidates can draw inspiration from include: “Your job is probably safe from artificial intelligence,” “What would humans do in a world of super-AI?,” “How to escape scientific stagnation,” “Is big business really getting too big?,” and “China and the West are in a race to foster innovation.” These topics offer a glimpse into the diverse range of economic issues that The Economist covers, and potential applicants are encouraged to explore these themes in their sample articles.

The successful candidate will be expected to produce high-quality, thought-provoking content that engages readers and sparks discussions. Whether delving into the implications of artificial intelligence on the job market, exploring the possibilities of a world dominated by super-AI, or examining the dynamics of innovation and competition between China and the West, the writer will need to offer fresh insights and perspectives on complex economic issues.

In addition to writing articles, the chosen writer will also have opportunities to contribute to podcasts and films, expanding their reach and influence in the field of economics. This multidimensional approach to journalism allows for a dynamic exploration of economic topics, engaging audiences through various mediums and formats.

Overall, the ideal candidate for the writer position on economics at The Economist will possess a blend of writing skills, economic knowledge, and creativity. They will be able to communicate complex ideas in a clear and compelling manner, while also demonstrating a keen interest in exploring the nuances of innovation, technology, and global economic trends. If you believe you have what it takes to excel in this role, don’t hesitate to submit your application before the deadline.
