Biden Slams Trump’s Social Security Cuts: “Destruction in Under 100 Days

Former President Joe Biden delivered a sharply critical commentary regarding the current administration, specifically addressing the handling of Social Security during former President Donald Trump’s second term. This marks Biden’s first public critique since departing from office earlier this year. Speaking at a national conference in Chicago, Biden characterized the ongoing changes at the Social Security Administration as damaging, expressing concern over the swift alterations made in less than 100 days. His remarks shed light on the troubling implications these alterations pose for millions reliant on Social Security.

In his address, Biden asserted, “Look what’s happened now. Fewer than 100 days, this new administration has made so – done so much damage and so much destruction. It’s kind of breathtaking it could happen that soon.” While he refrained from naming Trump directly, he expressed alarm regarding proposed cuts and significant staffing changes within the Social Security Administration led by officials in the Department of Government Efficiency. In particular, he highlighted the distress among Americans attempting to navigate a restructured Social Security system, fearing for the safety of their benefits.

Biden pointed out the drastic reduction in staff at the agency, stating, “There’s 7,000 employees, 7,000 out the door in that time. Including the most seasoned career officials.” Such figures indicate the scale of the reorganization under Elon Musk, of whom Biden spoke obliquely, indicating that the reshaping of Social Security was reminiscent of the “move fast, break things” attitude of tech startups. He condemned this approach, noting that it results in “needless pain and sleepless nights,” highlighting the adverse effects any hasty policy changes could impart on vulnerable citizens.

The former president underscored the profound disarray resulting from these staff reductions and changes to policy. He pointed out that with a sizeable cut to the technology division of the Social Security Administration, the website intended for beneficiaries is now facing frequent outages, hindering access to essential services. Biden expressed concern stating, “But now, the technology division of the Social Security administration has been cut in half. And so the website’s crashing. People can’t sign onto their accounts. What do you think it does?”

As his address transitioned towards a broader perspective on national unity, Biden warned of the ever-widening divide within the country, stressing that it has not been this fractured in history. He denounced the attitudes of what he deemed a “thirty percent” of the population lacking empathy, emphasizing the need for fairness in the nation. “We can’t go on like this as a divided nation, as divided as we are,” he lamented, suggesting this division complicates progress.

In addition to criticizing the cuts imperiling the agency, Biden alleged that Republicans intend to dismantle Social Security with the ulterior motive of redirecting funds to sustain tax cuts that primarily benefit corporations and the wealthy. He posed rhetorical questions to his audience, asking, “Why are these guys taking aim at Social Security now?” and concluded that the goal is to exploit these funds to continue servicing tax obligations generated from the 2017 tax cuts.

The response from the Social Security Administration was swift; they dismissed Biden’s comments as falsehoods and defended their actions against his assertion of massive layoffs. They highlighted measures purportedly taken to enhance service capabilities and pushed back against claims of impending harm to the trust fund.

Adding a lighter tone to his dialogue, Biden employed humor and self-reflection, lightly addressing his age and the absurdity of certain Social Security myths. He quipped about the misconceptions surrounding Social Security fraud, stating, “By the way, those 300-year-old folk getting that Social Security, I want to meet them… ” This joviality contrasted sharply with the serious undertones of his critique.

Biden’s address coincided with coordinated protests by Democrats across the country, a direct response to fears concerning Social Security cuts. Amidst the ongoing political turbulence and damage control, Biden’s commentary revealed not only a polarizing current political landscape but also emphasized the essential nature of Social Security in providing essential support to millions of Americans. His remarks reaffirmed the necessity for mindful governance, especially when it concerns programs that protect society’s most vulnerable citizens.
