Kermit the Frog to Deliver Inspiring Commencement Speech at University of Maryland’s Class of 2025

The University of Maryland (UMD) is set to have a most unique commencement speaker for the Class of 2025, welcoming Kermit the Frog—an iconic Muppet character known for his bright green color and heartfelt messages. This unexpected choice highlights the university’s connection to Jim Henson, the late creator of the beloved character, who was a proud alumnus of UMD. Kermit’s participation in the graduation ceremony is not only a tribute to Henson’s legacy but also reflects the university’s ongoing celebration of creativity, optimism, and environmental advocacy.

Kermit the Frog is celebrated for his multifaceted career as an environmental advocate, best-selling author, Peabody Award winner, and an international superstar. The announcement of his appearance was made in a charming YouTube video shared by the University of Maryland, where Kermit humorously acknowledged his role by saying, “Uh, I guess it’s me.” This lighthearted moment set the tone for what promises to be an engaging and memorable experience for the graduates and their families.

The origin of Kermit the Frog is linked to Jim Henson, who ingeniously crafted the character in 1955 using material from his mother’s turquoise coat and two ping pong balls for eyes. Henson’s connection to UMD is significant, as he graduated from there in 1960 with a degree in home economics. During his years at the university, he was actively involved in various theater productions and even operated a silk screen printing business from the student union, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and passion for the arts.

Kenson’s legacy isn’t just confined to the past; it continues to influence students and the community at large. For instance, in the fall of 2024, Kermit made an appearance at UMD that captivated audiences and sold out the College of Arts and Humanities Dean’s Lecture Series. Now, he is set to return to the university to address graduates from summer 2024, winter 2024, and spring 2025, reiterating the enduring connection between the Muppets and UMD.

In a statement praising Kermit’s involvement in the commencement exercises, UMD President Darryll J. Pines expressed excitement and gratitude. He stated, “I am thrilled that our graduates and their families will experience the optimism and insight of the world-renowned Kermit the Frog at such a meaningful time in their lives.” Pines also echoed the sentiment of pride in Jim Henson’s contributions and reiterated the university’s honor to welcome Kermit to campus 65 years after Henson’s graduation.

Kermit expressed his enthusiasm about the forthcoming event, emphasizing his desire to encourage the Class of 2025 as they transition into the next chapter of their lives. He remarked, “I just know the class of 2025 is going to leap into the world and make it a better place, so if a few encouraging words from a frog can help, then I’ll be there!” This statement encapsulates Kermit’s positive spirit and unwavering belief in the potential of young people to effect meaningful change in the world.

While it remains unclear if other members of the Muppet ensemble, including the famously glamorous Miss Piggy, will join Kermit for the occasion, the anticipation surrounding this event continues to grow. Given Kermit’s stature within popular culture, his speech is expected to resonate with the graduates and serve as a source of inspiration.

Each year, the University of Maryland commemorates Jim Henson’s contributions with celebrations and tributes, including a statue installed in 2003 portraying Henson and Kermit seated on a red granite bench, located near the Stamp Student Union. This statue, along with Kermit’s upcoming address, serves as a reminder of Henson’s legacy and the impact of creativity and kindness on society.

As commencement day approaches, the excitement around Kermit the Frog’s participation continues to build. Not only is it a nod to Jim Henson’s enduring influence, but it also reflects UMD’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and spirited academic environment. In a world that often seems inundated with challenges, Kermit’s message of hope and belief in the impossible is a fitting send-off for a new generation of graduates.
