In a recent development, a senior ISIS official was reportedly killed in a US airstrike on Sunday in Syria, according to a statement released by the US military on Wednesday.
“On June 16, US Central Command conducted an airstrike in Syria, killing Usamah Jamal Muhammad Ibrahim al-Janabi, a senior ISIS official and facilitator,” the statement from US Central Command confirmed. The report also mentioned that his death will disrupt ISIS’s ability to resource and conduct terror attacks.
CENTCOM further clarified that there was “no indication” of any civilians being harmed in the strike, which was not previously announced.
The US military has been actively targeting ISIS officials in Africa and the Middle East. Just three weeks ago, an airstrike in a remote area near Dhaardaar in Somalia was reported to have taken down three ISIS militants, according to US Africa Command.
Between January and March 2024, CENTCOM and its partners successfully eliminated seven ISIS operatives in Syria and detained 27 more. In Iraq during the same time period, 11 operatives were killed and 36 individuals were detained.
In a statement made in April, CENTCOM commander Gen. Erik Kurilla emphasized the commitment to the enduring defeat of ISIS due to the threat they pose regionally and globally. He reiterated the focus on targeting specific ISIS members involved in external operations outside of Iraq and Syria, as well as those attempting to break out detained ISIS members in an effort to rebuild their forces.
