David Ames Embraces Roy Keane Spirit as Team GB Captain for Paris 2024

David Ames is gearing up to lead Team GB at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a mix of youthful talent and seasoned experience by his side. As one of two three-time Olympians selected for the 16-strong men’s squad, Ames brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the team. Despite his reserved demeanor off the field, the Cookstown native channels the outspokenness of former footballer Roy Keane when it comes to guiding his teammates.

“I’m quite reserved, quite quiet, and I have a really good group of leaders around me who I lean on very heavily,” said Ames. “They all have different strengths and are able to produce that at different times.”

With head coach Paul Revington at the helm, Team GB has undergone a transformation, focusing on an attacking style of play that has earned them a spot in the final of the EuroHockey Championships. Ames and Revington have a long history together, dating back to their time with the Irish national team in 2009.

“I knew exactly what Revs was going to bring in and what to expect,” said Ames. “To be honest, he’s the exact same as he was on the first day and I wouldn’t change that for the world.”

As Team GB gears up to face Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands in Group A, their sights are set on a podium finish. The Stade Yves-du-Manoir, a historic venue that also hosted the 1924 Games, will be the stage for their matches in Paris.

“I’m probably in a position to say that this is the best chance we’ve probably ever had,” said Ames. “I think we had a really good chance in Rio and Tokyo, but we just didn’t quite have it. I think this team is a little bit different.”

With the support of his family and friends in attendance, including those who have never experienced the Olympics before, Ames is determined to make them proud and bring home a gold medal. As the last Northern Irish athletes to achieve Olympic gold were Stephen Martin and Jimmy Kirkwood, the goal is clear for Ames and his teammates.

“That’s the aim – that’s the goal,” admitted Ames. “That’s exactly how I would like to finish my career, essentially.”

As the countdown to Paris 2024 begins, Team GB is ready to showcase their skills on the global stage and compete for the ultimate prize in hockey. With the support of their fans and the guidance of their experienced captain, David Ames, the team is poised to make their mark in Olympic history.
