Kerry Willetts, a 45-year-old stay-at-home mom of three from Staffordshire, England, has earned the title of “furniture flipper” after successfully refurbishing old furniture items for profit. She began her journey in 2021, taking on commission-based projects where customers would provide her with old pieces in need of some TLC. Initially looking for a way to make some extra money, Willetts soon found herself growing a business out of her passion for upcycling furniture.
She shared with SWNS that many times, clients would entrust her with items that held sentimental value, such as furniture pieces that once belonged to deceased relatives. For a fee ranging from $215 to $325, Willetts would work her magic on these pieces and return them to their owners in just a few weeks. One particular meaningful project involved a bureau that a woman couldn’t part with due to its sentimental value, as it was made by her granddad. Willetts transformed the piece with a fresh paint job and an art deco design, giving it a new lease on life.
As time went on, Willetts began salvaging items that were destined for the trash, seeing the potential in each piece to be transformed. Despite encountering furniture that was in poor condition, she believed that with a keen eye and creativity, any piece could be restored to its former glory. One project, in particular, fetched around $1,000 after Willetts worked her magic on it, showcasing her ability to add value to previously neglected items. Her favorite piece to date is a cabinet adorned with a vibrant sunburst design, breathing new life into a once ordinary piece of furniture.
With a social media account dedicated to showcasing her designs and projects to over 87,000 followers, Willetts has found a sense of fulfillment in her creative work. Despite not considering herself a crafty person initially, she fell in love with the art of upcycling furniture and has since built a successful business around it. She credits the flexibility of her job as a perfect fit for her family life, allowing her to continue pursuing her passion while balancing her responsibilities as a mother.
