James Guy feels rejuvenated ahead of Paris 2024 after training change

James Guy, a seasoned swimmer with three Olympic Games under his belt, has recently made a significant training change that has reignited his passion and competitiveness as he prepares for Paris 2024. At 28 years old, Guy made the bold decision to move from the Aquatics GB Performance Centre in Bath to Millfield, where he joined forces with his teammate Matt Richards. This move came after Guy felt that his performances in the pool were not up to par and knew that a change was necessary to propel him towards success in the upcoming Games.

Despite already having two Olympic gold medals in relay events from Tokyo, Guy felt that his individual performances were lacking. In December, he secured a European Short Course silver in the 200m freestyle, marking his first individual podium finish in that event since 2016. With a total of five Olympic medals to his name, Guy is determined to continue improving and aiming for further success in Paris.

In reflecting on his decision to switch training programs, Guy admitted that he had lost confidence in his abilities while training in Bath and felt that his freestyle technique was not at the level it needed to be. Moving to a new environment provided him with a fresh perspective and renewed motivation. By focusing on endurance work and returning to training methods from his earlier years, Guy has seen a significant improvement in his performance, particularly in his freestyle events.

The shift in training location has reignited Guy’s passion for swimming and has reminded him of the sheer dedication and hard work required to succeed at the highest level. With Paris 2024 on the horizon, Guy is fully focused on his preparations and believes that he is on track to deliver his best performance yet at the Games. By realigning his training program and prioritizing his physical and mental well-being, Guy has found a renewed sense of purpose and determination as he heads into his third Olympic appearance.

As Guy prepares for the upcoming Games, he will be part of the men’s freestyle relay quartet alongside teammates Tom Dean, Duncan Scott, and Matt Richards. The quartet will be aiming to defend their 4x200m gold medal from Tokyo and showcase their skills on the world stage once again. With the eyes of the world on them, Guy and his teammates are ready to create a lasting legacy of success and achievement in the sport of swimming.

For Guy, the Olympic Games represent the ultimate stage for athletic competition, with the entire world tuning in to witness the best athletes in action. He acknowledges the significance of the Games and the opportunity they provide to showcase his talents on a global scale. While there may not be financial rewards in swimming like in other sports such as athletics, Guy is motivated by the opportunity to represent his country, create a legacy of success, and inspire others through his performances.

As Guy continues his preparations for Paris 2024, he remains grateful for the support he receives from UK Sport, which has been instrumental in his success over the past decade. With funding from UK Sport, Guy has been able to focus on his training, travel for competitions, and ultimately pursue his Olympic dreams. As he reflects on his journey in the sport of swimming, Guy recognizes the importance of having a support system in place to help him achieve his goals and reach new heights in his career.

In conclusion, James Guy’s decision to switch training programs and join forces with his teammate at Millfield has reinvigorated his passion for swimming and reignited his competitive spirit ahead of Paris 2024. With a renewed focus on training, physical preparation, and mental fortitude, Guy is poised to deliver a standout performance at his third Olympic Games. As he aims to secure further success and create a lasting legacy in the sport of swimming, Guy remains grateful for the support he receives from UK Sport and the opportunity to represent his country on the world stage.
