Geraint Thomas, a distinguished member of the Ineos Grenadiers team, has openly expressed a sense of apprehension and nervousness as he approaches what is set to be the final Tour de France of his illustrious career. The Welsh cyclist, who made his debut in the prestigious race back in 2007, previously triumphed in the competition in 2018, thus cementing his legacy in the world of professional cycling. As Thomas prepares to hang up his racing wheels at the end of this season, the accompanying emotions of anticipation and unease resonate deeply with him.

In a candid conversation with TNT Sports, Thomas shared insights into his mindset as he prepares for this significant event. He remarked on his feelings of anxiousness, drawing parallels to his rookie experience in 2007 when he felt similarly unsettled and uncertain regarding what lay ahead. “I’m a bit apprehensive. I feel a bit like 2007 again, just a bit nervous, not sure what to quite expect,” he admitted, hinting at the emotional weight connected to his final participation in the Tour.

Regarding his physical readiness, Thomas reflected on the rigorous training regime he has undertaken to ensure he is in good shape for this pivotal race. He expressed a belief that competing in the Tour de Suisse just prior to the Tour would have been beneficial but remained optimistic about his condition and the forthcoming challenges. “I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully, we’re going to have a good race for myself and the team,” Thomas stated, emphasizing his desire for a successful outing.

Looking back on his first Tour de France experience, Thomas pondered the advice he might offer his younger self. “Just enjoy it, soak it all up, because it goes super quick,” he recalled, indicating a wisdom that comes with age and experience. He acknowledged the importance of making the most out of every moment and urged younger athletes to appreciate their journey. This reflection demonstrates the maturity that Thomas has cultivated throughout his long career.

In addition to his personal aspirations, Thomas is also keenly aware of his role in supporting his teammates, particularly young talent Carlos Rodriguez. He expressed enthusiasm for being competitive and aiming for stage wins, stating, “I’d love to just be competitive and go for a stage. I think a stage win would be amazing.” Nevertheless, his commitment to assisting Rodriguez is paramount, as he plans to leverage his experience and insights to support the emerging star throughout the grueling mountain stages.

Not too long ago, Thomas’s participation in the Tour cast doubt due to a severe crash during the Tour de Suisse. However, after a period of recovery, he has demonstrated resilience and determination, gearing himself up for the three-week challenge ahead. As the excitement builds for the Tour, even seasoned champions like Tadej Pogačar anticipate a fierce contest. Pogačar is set to defend his title, adding another layer of competitive spirit to the event.

Beyond the Tour, Geraint Thomas’s contributions to cycling extend significantly beyond the Tour de France. He has proudly represented Great Britain on two occasions, earning team pursuit gold medals in both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics. Additionally, he clinched team pursuit gold at three World Championships, marking him as a leading figure in a remarkable era for British cycling. His stature in the sport has inspired many young cyclists, and his legacy is sure to endure well beyond his retirement.

The 2025 Tour de France will kick off in Lille on Saturday, culminating in a grand finish on Sunday, July 27, in Paris. Fans and enthusiasts of cycling can catch all the action live on TNT Sports and discovery+, ensuring that they do not miss a moment of this historic final chapter in Thomas’s career. As the countdown begins toward this monumental race, the cycling community rallies behind one of its most celebrated figures, eager to witness how his story will unfold in these final competitive days.
