According to her, it now takes less than 15 seconds of someone’s voice to create a realistic voice clone, showcasing the rapid advancement of technology in this field. Just half a year ago, a much longer and clearer sample was necessary to produce a credible imitation, indicating how swiftly AI-driven impersonation tactics are evolving. Tobac summarized the situation by stating that voice-cloning signifies a shift in social engineering strategies and is becoming a routine method for impersonation attempts.
Expressing his concerns, Rubio conveyed his anticipation of more AI-driven impersonation efforts against him. While on a diplomatic visit to Malaysia, he commented that these impersonation attempts might not just be confined to him and could potentially extend to others. He shared that shortly after taking office, he received queries from foreign ministers regarding whether he had contacted them via text, showcasing the rapid proliferation of this issue in today’s digital landscape. He described these impersonation schemes as a stark reality of the 21st century.
The specifics of Rubio’s impersonation incident involved an unknown assailant who created an account on the Signal messaging platform using the username “[email protected].” This attacker made contact with various individuals, including foreign ministers, governors, and senators, leaving voicemails and sending messages that seemed to come from the Secretary’s legitimate account. Such attempts at impersonation have raised alarms regarding the potential for AI technology to disrupt diplomatic interactions and the integrity of communications among high-level officials.
In an even broader context, an AI-automated robocall executed in the previous year mimicked then-President Joe Biden’s voice, aimed at misleading voters during a primary.
