Latin Ingredient Labels in Cosmetics Endanger Allergy Sufferers, Campaigners Warn

In recent discussions surrounding cosmetic safety, a pressing issue has arisen regarding the labeling of makeup and skincare products. Specifically, the reliance on Latin-based names for ingredients poses a significant threat to individuals with allergies. Campaigners assert that the ingredients should be listed in English, as the current format jeopardizes the wellbeing of those susceptible to allergic reactions. According to these advocates, the inclusion of Latin names—often a standard practice among cosmetic companies—creates a barrier for consumers who may not have sufficient knowledge of the language, endangering their health.

One individual making waves in this campaign is Member of Parliament Becky Gittins, who has a severe nut allergy. She points out that less than five percent of young people today are educated in Latin, which raises alarms when they encounter labels filled with obscure scientific nomenclature. This concern is backed by many parents with children who have allergies, as they are left to decode complex terms without proper support. A mother from Essex, Eve Huang, shared a harrowing account of her daughter Elysia’s allergic reaction after using a body wash, emphasizing the need for simpler, clearer labeling akin to that used in food products.

Amy Loring, a well-known makeup artist and influencer, echoed these sentiments, describing the current labeling system as not only frustrating but potentially life-threatening. She argues that it is imperative for cosmetic companies to reconsider how they display their ingredients. Some companies have initiated a shift by offering translations of Latin names into English, but many still do not comply with this practice, which leaves consumers in the dark about what they are applying to their skin.

According to the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), Latin-based names are mandated by the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) system, which aims to establish a universal language worldwide. Despite the rationale behind this global standardization, critics argue that this system fails to account for the average consumer’s ability to understand or interpret such complex terminology.

The constituents of the product labels often seem harmless enough with names like Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis for sweet almond oil or Arachis Hypogaea for peanut oil, but these terms can obscure crucial information for those with allergies. Eve Huang’s daughter, whose allergies include tree nuts, had a drastic reaction to a body wash that featured such nomenclature. Huang raised an essential question, “Why are allergens not listed in bold? Why are there no warning signs?” This glaring gap in risk communication can lead to grave consequences for individuals with allergies.

MP Gittins herself recounted an experience at a spa where she had to search for Latin names on product labels. This incident further solidified her belief in the need for clearer regulations surrounding ingredient labeling. She expressed how her condition brings about a “base level of anxiety,” forcing her to choose between a life constrained by caution and curiosity.

Participants in the beauty community, such as Rachel Williams, also highlight their struggles with unclear labeling. Williams’ son has severe nut allergies, and his safety hinges on her ability to interpret Latin names, which can be daunting. With the growing prevalence of allergies, the demand for improved labeling is more critical than ever.

In response to these concerns, the CTPA maintained that the INCI system allows consumers to recognize products globally, providing consistency that fosters safety. However, it’s evident that merely having a uniform system isn’t enough if it leaves the majority of consumers uninformed. There are ongoing efforts to create consumer-friendly resources like the COSMILE app, which aims to help customers better understand ingredient lists through technology.

As the discourse continues, it is clear that balancing safety, education, and accessibility in ingredient labeling remains a multifaceted challenge in the cosmetic industry. The call for change is not just about simplifying names—it’s about ensuring the safety of consumers who cannot afford to take risks with their health. Whether through legislative changes, industry practices, or consumer advocacy, the message is resonating: it’s time to prioritize clearer, more comprehensible labeling for the sake of everyone’s safety.
