    The narrative begins with Jordan Hayes, a 37-year-old Californian who typically flexes a disinterest in politics. Despite opting out of the 2024 election, Hayes surprised himself by aligning with Trump on one issue: the superiority of cane sugar Coke, often referred to in the U.S. as “Mexican Coke.” As a long-time enthusiast of this variant, Hayes appreciates its unique sweetness compared to the mainstream corn syrup version. “There’s a different kind of sweetness involved,” he mentions, emphasizing the quality of the cane sugar formula.

    Trump’s endorsement of cane sugar may seem ironic given his well-documented preference for Diet Coke. Nevertheless, his advocacy aligns with decades-long efforts to support the U.S. sugar industry, which has thrived under government policies that limit foreign competition. With tariffs designed to shield domestic sugar producers, the industry enjoys artificially inflated prices often twice those found internationally. This government’s approach has not only preserved the position of sugar farmers but also drawn significant political donations from the industry.

    As noted by various industry professionals, Trump’s actions resonate deeply within the complex political landscape of food production and consumption. They argue that his backing of cane sugar reflects a broader pattern of political patronage that favors the sugar industry—a group known for its powerful lobbying and financial influence within Washington. Interestingly, he suggests that Trump’s support for cane sugar taps into consumer nostalgia, appealing to those wary of corn syrup while igniting memories of Coca-Cola’s storied past.
