Echoes of War: How Ukrainian Soldiers and Civilians Live with the Lingering Terror of Drones

The ongoing war in Ukraine has not only been fought on the battlefield, but it has also permeated the psychological fabric of those involved, particularly veterans returning from the frontlines. The evolving conflict has seen the rise of drone warfare, a phenomenon that has dramatically increased the complexity of battlefield experiences and post-war rehabilitation.

In Kiev, a Ukrainian drone operator, Pavlo, detailed how the sound of drones, once mere mechanical buzzes, has become a haunting reminder of danger even in civilian life. Following his return from the front, he attempted to operate a four-rotor drone in his cramped apartment, but it failed to respond, mirroring the disconnection he feels from his past role in the war. Pavlo emphasized the relentless psychological pressure that FPV (first-person view) drones exert on soldiers. These technologically advanced tools can stalk targets from afar, changing the landscape of combat and warfare.

“I was being hunted,” he remarked, referring to the unmistakable, high-pitched whine of an FPV drone. Despite its incapacity to physically harm him in his flat, the sound remains a trigger, commanding his mind to relive the harrowing moments from the battlefield where survival often hinged on one’s ability to react to the drone’s ominous presence.

Pavlo’s experience speaks to a broader issue affecting many veterans. As warfare has transitioned to heavily rely on drone technology, a new condition has arose—dubbed “droneophobia” by medical professionals like Dr. Serhii Andriichenko, chief psychiatrist at the military hospital in Kiev. This psychological affliction causes veterans to relate common mechanical noises, such as those from lawnmowers or motorcycles, to their experiences in combat. The soundscape of their lives has changed profoundly; instead of feeling safe in their home country, they grapple with an acute, persistent anxiety.

Savur, another soldier who lost an arm in a drone attack, articulated that the sound of drones was a constant in combat, one that could inflict psychological warfare. Interestingly, rather than escaping these reminders of war upon returning home, veterans find themselves constantly on high alert. Dr. Andriichenko notes that many patients show anxiety triggers in response to everyday sounds. The transition from the violent chaos of war to the mundane reality of civilian life is rife with unexpected challenges as echoes of drone warfare linger.

Moreover, this psychological toll is not confined to soldiers alone; ordinary civilians have also become victims of drone terror. Notably, regions like Kherson, once under Russian occupation, have experienced drone strikes targeting civilians. Individuals like Dmytro Olifirenko, who was injured while waiting for a bus, now hear the drone’s buzz echoing through their daily lives, impacting their mental health significantly. The sound of an approaching drone morphs into an omnipresent anxiety, transforming even routine tasks into potential threats.

This evolution of warfare has reshaped the very essence of security for all involved. For the soldiers, nature and normalcy have become fraught with reminders of the battlefield. For civilians, the psychological effects of drone warfare extend far beyond the combat zones, infiltrating the daily lives of those striving to maintain a semblance of normalcy amid chaos. As the war continues to unfold, both groups navigate a new reality marred by the sounds of the drones and the memories they carry, highlighting a complex interplay between technology, war, and human experience.

Thus, in Ukraine, the challenges extend beyond the physical scars of war. The pervasive psychological impact of drone warfare has engendered a new type of fear and trauma, as sound has become an unyielding reminder of danger that soldiers and civilians alike cannot easily escape. This lasting psychological burden serves as a potent reminder of the war’s toll, illustrating how conflicts continue to exert influence long after the fighting has ceased.
