In breaking news, Rep. Lauren Boebert has emerged victorious in the Republican primary for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, CNN confirms. Boebert faced a tough challenge in the district she has represented for two terms but managed to secure the win.
Boebert, known for her strong support of MAGA principles, narrowly won reelection in Colorado’s 3rd District in 2022. In January, she announced her candidacy for the open 4th District seat previously held by Republican Ken Buck.
Buck, a long-serving member of the House Freedom Caucus, resigned in March amid criticism of fellow Republicans for perpetuating falsehoods about the 2020 election. His departure triggered a special election to fill the remainder of his term, but Boebert chose not to participate in that race, which also took place on Tuesday.
According to CNN projections, Republican Greg Lopez, former mayor of Parker, will defeat Democrat Trisha Calvarese in the special election and serve until January. Lopez did not run in the regular primary, where Boebert was among six Republican candidates.
Boebert gained national attention in 2020 when she defeated incumbent Rep. Scott Tipton in the primary. She is now favored to win a third term in her new district, where the numbers suggest strong support for former President Trump in the 2020 election.
Despite facing accusations of opportunism by switching districts, Boebert maintains that her decision was based on personal reasons, including a desire for a fresh start after a public divorce. She solidified her position as the leading GOP candidate in the 4th District by winning the Republican nominating assembly in April.
By moving to a new district, Boebert avoided a contentious rematch with Democrat Adam Frisch, who narrowly lost to her in the 2022 general election. Frisch is now running unopposed in the Democratic primary for another shot at Congress.
