Rare White Bison Named ‘Wakan Gli’ in Sacred Ceremony

A white buffalo calf was born earlier this month in Yellowstone, and it has been officially named by Native American tribal members. The momentous birth of the calf turned into a celebration, with hundreds of people gathering for the reveal of its name. The calf has been named Wakan Gli, which means “Return Sacred” in Lakota, according to the Associated Press (AP).

The religious naming ceremony for Wakan Gli consisted of dancing, drumming, singing, and the telling of the White Buffalo Calf Woman prophecy. The birth of the rare white buffalo calf is believed to signify that “better times” are ahead. This message serves as both a blessing and a warning, as Chief Arvol Looking Horse emphasized during the ceremony.

The ceremony took place a few miles west of Yellowstone, in far southern Montana, and attracted an estimated 500 attendees. Representatives from various Native American tribes, including the Colville Tribes in Washington, Lakota and Sioux in the Dakotas, Northern Arapaho in Wyoming, and Shoshone-Bannock in Idaho, were present at the sacred event.

While the calf has only been seen by a few individuals, one Montana photographer was lucky enough to capture photos of the rare white-furred animal. Erin Braaten of Dancing Aspens Photography came across the calf while on a family vacation in Yellowstone. At first, Braaten mistook the calf for a coyote but quickly realized it was a white bison calf.

The sighting of the rare animal has garnered significant attention, with many people being intrigued by the unique creature. Yellowstone officials are aware of the social media posts and media stories about the sightings but have not confirmed if a white bison calf was born in the park. They have staff regularly surveying the field, and if the calf is spotted, they will share that information with the public.

The birth of Wakan Gli holds great significance for the Lakota people and other Native American tribes who revere the American bison, also known as buffalo. The appearance of the white buffalo calf is seen as the fulfillment of sacred prophecy and a message to take better care of the Earth.

Overall, the birth of Wakan Gli has been described as a miracle and is considered a momentous event by those who hold the bison in high regard. The calf’s arrival has brought together people from various tribes and communities, emphasizing the importance of unity and environmental stewardship.

In conclusion, the birth of the rare white buffalo calf in Yellowstone has captured the hearts and minds of many, symbolizing hope, blessings, and a call to action for a brighter future for all. The significance of Wakan Gli’s arrival resonates deeply with Native American traditions and beliefs, underscoring the importance of preserving sacred connections to the land and its inhabitants.
