12-foot Tiger Shark Spotted near Magic Island in Hawaii, Officials Issue Warning

Beachgoers in Hawaii are being urged to exercise caution and stay informed after a 12-foot tiger shark was spotted near Magic Island. The Honolulu Emergency Services Department issued a shark warning following the sighting of the marine creature swimming just 30 yards from the island’s break wall along Oahu’s South Shore, Island News reported. Despite the sighting, the shark has been labeled as “non-aggressive” by the emergency team after it was spotted around noon on June 27. As of now, there have been no reports of injuries or attacks related to the shark, as noted by the local outlet.

Following the sighting, warning signs have been posted along Magic Island to alert beach visitors of the presence of the tiger shark. Authorities are encouraging anyone planning to swim in the ocean to check in with the lifeguards on duty for any updated information on the shark warning before entering the water. Tiger sharks are known for their aggressive behavior and are responsible for the second-highest number of shark attacks on humans, trailing only behind great white sharks, according to Ocean Conservancy.

National Geographic has reported that tiger sharks, along with bull sharks and great white sharks, are among the three species most likely to attack humans, even when unprovoked. This warning about the tiger shark sighting comes in the wake of another incident on June 12 when an “aggressive” tiger shark was spotted off Kakaako, as per Hawaii News Now. The report from the outlet detailed an encounter with an eight- to ten-foot aggressive tiger shark that was observed feeding on fish in the lineup at Point Panic surf break.

In the past month, there have been multiple sightings and encounters with both aggressive and non-aggressive sharks around Oahu. Tragically, there was a fatal shark attack involving a lifeguard and professional surfer off the North Shore of Oahu. The incident underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and following any advisories issued by local authorities. Fox News Digital reached out to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department for additional information on the recent shark activity in Hawaii.

As the summer season continues, it is crucial for beachgoers and swimmers to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety while enjoying the ocean. Stay tuned to local news outlets and updates from authorities for the latest information on shark sightings and warnings in the area. By following the guidance of lifeguards and remaining aware of potential hazards in the water, visitors can help minimize the risk of shark-related incidents and enjoy a safe day at the beach.
