Ian McKellen’s Recovery Update: Actor Steps Down from Featured Role in Production Tour as He Focuses on Healing

Renowned actor Ian McKellen will not be returning to the stage as planned after an accident left him with injuries to his wrist and neck. The 85-year-old “X-Men” star shared an update on his health, stating that he is focused on making a full recovery and his doctors recommend avoiding work for the next few weeks.

McKellen’s role in the production “Player Kings,” a reworked version of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” parts I and II, will be taken over by understudy David Semark for the upcoming tour scheduled to run through July 27. McKellen had fallen on stage at the Noël Coward Theatre in London last month during a performance of the play.

In a statement following his accident, McKellen expressed a speedy recovery and eagerness to return to work. He also mentioned the importance of not letting down the audience despite missing a performance.

“Player Kings” is set to premiere at Bristol Hippodrome with Semark assuming the lead role. The show also features actors Richard Coyle and Toheeb Jimoh from “Ted Lasso.” The production will run for four days in Bristol before moving on to Birmingham.
