Young Investor James Fishback Enters Florida Governor Race, Takes Aim at Trump’s Chosen Candidate Byron Donalds

In the evolving political landscape of Florida, another contender has emerged in the race to succeed outgoing Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who is ineligible to run again due to term limits. GOP hopeful James Fishback, a 30-year-old investor hailing from the rural regions of Florida’s Panhandle, officially declared his candidacy on a recent Monday. His entry into the race sets the stage for a more extensive challenge against Congressman Byron Donalds, who is the favored candidate of former President Donald Trump. Fishback’s candidacy promises to stir up the political dynamics leading into the next election cycle, particularly as both candidates vie for the support of Trump’s voter base.

In his announcement video, Fishback did not hold back his criticisms of Rep. Byron Donalds. He scrutinized Donalds’ congressional record while aligning his rhetoric with that of Governor DeSantis, who previously ran against Trump in the 2023 presidential primaries. This political context hints at a complicated relationship between DeSantis and Trump, which could influence party alliances and voter sentiment in upcoming primaries. By presenting himself as a viable alternative to Donalds, Fishback positions himself as a candidate who can resonate with those seeking a departure from the establishment.

Following DeSantis’ example, Fishback has made bold pledges, including an intention to abolish property taxes in Florida. Additionally, he has voiced strong opposition to the H-1B visa program, which permits U.S. companies to hire foreign workers with specialized skills. His economic principles resonate with the populist rhetoric that has become increasingly common in GOP debates, reflecting a push towards prioritizing local citizens in employment opportunities. In doing so, Fishback aims to solidify his stance among constituents who feel that economic rewards are often inaccessible to the American workforce due to global competition.

One of the more striking statements made by Fishback in his announcement was a declaration of pride in his American identity, asserting, “Florida is our home, America is our birthright, and we will never let them steal it from us.” This declaration reflects a broader theme in his campaign focused on protecting what he perceives as American values and rights. He has also identified immigration—both legal and illegal—as critical issues for his platform, echoing the sentiments of various Republican leaders who have capitalized on themes of grievance regarding race and history.

Furthermore, Fishback took an unapologetic stance on Florida’s historical narrative, remarking, “I’m a proud American who will never apologize for our history,” while prominently featuring a Confederate monument from Jackson County, Florida, in his video. Such a stance is indicative of a calculated attempt to galvanize support from a conservative base that resonates with traditional and sometimes controversial views regarding America’s past. This perspective could be divisive but is often employed to energize specific voter demographics historically associated with strong support for GOP candidates.

In response to Fishback’s candidacy, Donalds’ campaign has swiftly moved to undermine his credibility, labeling him as a “RINO,” or Republican in name only. The campaign emphasized Donalds’ endorsement by Trump as a critical advantage, asserting that it validates his position as a true conservative representative for Florida’s constituents. Ryan Smith, the chief strategist for Donalds’ campaign, reaffirmed this by stating, “Byron Donalds will be Florida’s next governor because he is the proven conservative fighter endorsed by President Trump,” asserting that any opponent would face inevitable defeat in the Republican primary.

As the political climate in Florida continues to shift, Fishback’s emergence adds another layer to an already dynamic race, making the 2026 election one to watch closely. His approach to tackling issues such as taxation and immigration, along with his invocation of a controversial yet proud historical narrative, may resonate with certain voter sectors. Conversely, Donalds’ established rapport with Trump and positioning as a conservative stalwart could present significant barriers for newcomers like Fishback. The upcoming months will be crucial in shaping the narratives, alliances, and ultimately, the candidates that will vie for the governorship of Florida.
