Ukrainian President Zelensky Arrives in DC for High-Stakes NATO Summit: Seeks Long-Term Support in War Against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has landed in Washington, DC, ahead of the high-stakes NATO summit, where providing ongoing support for Ukraine’s fight against Russia is the top priority. Zelensky is set to rally allied backing for his country, hold talks with President Joe Biden, and deliver a key address during the summit. NATO allies have pledged “significant” announcements regarding Ukraine as the global gathering kicks off on Tuesday.

“We are fighting for the needed decisive actions from America and Europe – something that will strengthen our soldiers,” Zelensky stated upon his arrival in Washington. He emphasized the importance of increased air defense systems, F-16 jets, and additional security guarantees, including weapons, financing, and political support.

Ukraine remains the central focus of the summit, with a European diplomat labeling it as priorities one, two, and three. However, questions linger about whether the support offered will suffice as the conflict persists with no clear end in sight.

Zelensky’s visit comes on the heels of a deadly Russian attack on Ukrainian cities, including a strike on the country’s largest children’s hospital, which resulted in over three dozen casualties. Ukrainian officials view the timing of the assault, just before the summit, as a deliberate message from Putin to NATO members.

The Biden administration recently adjusted its policy to permit US weapons for use in strikes on Russian territory where Russian forces are implicated in cross-border attacks. While Ukrainian officials welcome this change, they advocate for broader authorization to target Russian military sites across Russian territory. They stress the urgency of decisive action to counter ongoing threats.

Furthermore, Ukraine seeks progress towards NATO membership and anticipates substantial commitments from the alliance during the summit. Efforts to solidify Ukraine’s path to membership have intensified leading up to the gathering, with expectations of concrete steps towards integration.

As discussions continue, the summit is expected to set the stage for enhanced support for Ukraine and reinforce the country’s position in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
