Tractor Supply Co. Backtracks on Climate and DEI Goals, Faces Backlash From Customers and Advocacy Groups

Tractor Supply Co. recently made a decision that has sparked controversy and backlash. The company, known for selling animal feed, pet food, and lawn and garden equipment, had previously set goals to cut emissions and achieve net zero emissions by 2040, as well as increase spending with diverse suppliers and boost representation of people of color in management roles. However, Tractor Supply has now announced that it will withdraw its carbon emission reduction goals, eliminate jobs and goals focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and stop sponsoring LGBTQ+ Pride festivals and voting campaigns.

This decision has caused a rift among customers, employees, and advocacy groups. The National Black Farmers Association has called for the resignation of Tractor Supply’s CEO, Hal Lawton, stating that the company has shown “little respect for (Black) farmers.” Other critics, including a Tractor Supply store manager who is gay, have voiced their disappointment and disapproval of the company’s reversal on progressive initiatives.

Tractor Supply’s move is part of a larger trend among corporations retreating from diversity and inclusion programs and environmental goals. Right-wing activists and businessmen have been pushing for this change, leading to boycotts against companies like Bud Light, Disney, and Nike. This backlash comes amid a wave of legislation in Republican-led states to curtail LGBTQ rights and DEI programs.

Despite the criticism, Tractor Supply has stated that it will focus on land and water conservation efforts and maintaining a respectful environment. However, the company’s decision has already alienated some customers and employees, raising concerns about the impact on its reputation and bottom line. Time will tell how Tractor Supply’s strategy shift will play out in the long run.
