Using declassified imagery obtained from US spy satellites, researchers from Durham University in the United Kingdom and the University of Al-Qadisiyah in Iraq have identified the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah’s exact site. This critical battle transpired in the years 636 or 637 AD and represented a pivotal event in the expansion of Arab Muslim territory beyond the Arabian Peninsula.
The significance of this discovery lies not only in the battle’s historical context but also in its previously elusive location, which had remained a mystery for centuries. The Battle of al-Qadisiyyah served as a landmark victory for the Arab Muslim forces, enabling their advancement into territories occupied by the Sasanian Empire, which had been the dominant power in the region. The thorough research, involving an integration of historical texts and advanced satellite imagery, brought newfound clarity to an important chapter in Islamic history.
William Deadman, an archaeological remote sensing specialist at Durham University, expressed his enthusiasm for this discovery. As part of a larger initiative to create a comprehensive map of archaeological sites throughout the Middle East, his team initially focused on documenting the Darb Zubaydah pilgrimage route that stretched from Kufa, Iraq, to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. During their investigations, Deadman and his colleagues realized they could leverage the historical data to locate the battlefield, an endeavor that Deadman was eager to pursue.
The methodology employed involved plotting circles on a map based on distances referenced in historical accounts of the battle. This strategic approach allowed the researchers to identify potential overlapping areas in the satellite images. Deadman reported his astonishment upon discovering particular features, such as a fort and a double wall, that matched descriptions found in historical documents. He recounted the moment of revelation, expressing disbelief at the corroborating evidence unveiled by the satellite imagery.
Through this analysis, the researchers determined that the battle occurred approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Kufa, in the Najaf Governorate. This assessment was further validated by on-site investigations conducted by Iraqui researchers. The Battle of al-Qadisiyyah involved a relatively smaller Arab Muslim force prevailing over a much larger army from the Sasanian Empire, marking the Arab Muslims’ first significant victory in their expansionary efforts. Deadman articulated the battle’s historical importance, noting it as a decisive moment that altered the course of history.
The landscape where the battle unfolded has transformed over time, now featuring farmland that has obliterated much of the original infrastructure. For instance, a large portion of the 6-mile wall originally surrounding the site has suffered destruction or has been assimilated into modern agricultural boundaries. Moreover, remnants of the ancient military outpost identified as al-’Udhayb appear to have been quarried. Despite these changes, Deadman and his team plan to conduct detailed mapping and archaeological surveys to uncover what remains of this historic site. However, progress remains complicated due to ongoing tensions in the region, which have temporarily stalled plans for fieldwork.
The research findings were documented in the journal “Antiquity,” adding scholarly credibility to this momentous discovery. Mustafa Baig, a lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter, characterized the team’s findings as “very important,” highlighting the strategic brilliance and courageous spirit exhibited by the Muslim army, which ultimately triumphed despite being outnumbered. He emphasized that the battle not only ended the Sasanian Empire’s dominion but also heralded the expansion of Islamic territory into Mesopotamia and Persia, reshaping the region’s history.
Furthermore, Baig speculated that this landmark discovery is likely to attract tourists, both religious pilgrims and history enthusiasts, eager to visit the site now that its precise location has been accurately identified.
