Chorley’s Anna Hopkin, a 28-year-old freestyle swimmer, faces a tough challenge in defending her Olympic title at Paris 2024. Three years ago, she played a key role as the anchor leg for Team GB in the 4x100m mixed medley relay, securing gold in a new world record time. Great Britain’s success in solving the mixed medley equation was evident, with Kathleen Dawson, Adam Peaty, James Guy, and Hopkin forming a winning team.

Despite Team USA’s tactical errors in Tokyo, Hopkin anticipates that teams will learn and adapt for Paris 2024. Reflecting on the past event, she acknowledges the need for a revised strategy and foresees a closer competition in the forthcoming Games. With experience and insight gained from previous competitions, Hopkin is prepared for a different approach in pursuit of defending her title.

As part of UK Sport’s National Lottery-funded World Class Programme, Hopkin benefits from full-time training, elite coaching, and cutting-edge medical support, essential for her journey towards Paris 2024. While excelling in relay events, Hopkin admits that her individual performances fell short of expectations during a period that impacted her confidence. Seeking guidance from a sports psychologist, she now maintains a ‘confidence diary’ to reinforce positive training experiences and enhance self-belief.

Embarking on her second Olympic Games, Hopkin looks forward to competing in the women’s 50m and 100m freestyle events, as well as participating in multiple relay competitions for Team GB. With increased experience and a deeper understanding of the Olympic environment, she aims to support younger team members and share valuable insights garnered from her journey in elite swimming.

Acknowledging the support from National Lottery players, who contribute over £30 million weekly towards important causes, including sports funding, Hopkin emphasizes the importance of grassroots development and elite performance. Grateful for the opportunity to represent her country on the global stage, she remains focused on her goals and eager to make a meaningful impact at the Paris 2024 Games.

In conclusion, Anna Hopkin’s journey as an elite swimmer reflects resilience, determination, and a commitment to excellence. As she prepares to defend her Olympic title in Paris 2024, she embraces the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, drawing strength from her past experiences and unwavering dedication to the sport. With the unwavering support of UK Sport and National Lottery players, she continues to inspire future generations and uphold the proud tradition of British swimming on the world stage.
