Arsenal Aiming for Global Dominance: Arteta Embraces “Kings of Corners” Comparison with Stoke

Dimitar Berbatov’s recent remarks about Arsenal Football Club have sparked an interesting conversation regarding their prowess from set-pieces. Comparing the Gunners to Stoke City, a team that gained notoriety for their exceptional threat during dead-ball situations, Berbatov’s comments highlight Arsenal’s significant improvements under the guidance of head coach Mikel Arteta. Notably, the Gunners have managed to score an impressive 22 times from corner situations since the beginning of the 2023/24 season. This has earned them the title of the ‘kings of corners,’ a designation Arteta appreciates but one he believes is just the starting point of their ambitions.

In addressing Berbatov’s comments, Arteta expressed his understanding of the accolade, acknowledging Stoke’s dominance in that department. “I take it as a big compliment because Stoke was so good at it,” he stated, emphasizing that the club’s ambitions extend beyond corners alone. Arteta’s vision is clear: he wants Arsenal to emerge not only as a leading force in set-pieces but in all aspects of the game, striving for excellence in open play and overall performance. He remarked, “We want to be the kings of everything,” illustrating a bold ambition to reclaim Arsenal’s status as a football powerhouse after a prolonged period of underachievement.

Arteta reflected on the club’s historical context, noting that Arsenal went through a difficult phase where they struggled to win significant matches for nearly two decades. This experience has fueled the desire for transformation within the club, pushing the Gunners to establish themselves among the best teams in world football. His aspirations extend to building the best academy and providing exceptional individual development for players. Essentially, Arteta’s goal is to elevate Arsenal to the pinnacle of the sport, both on and off the pitch.

Integral to Arsenal’s set-piece strategy are players like Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, who have taken charge of corner-taking duties. Arteta explained that a key part of developing a successful set-piece strategy involves adapting players’ capabilities to meet the team’s needs. “It’s about adapting the player’s abilities to the team’s needs and to how we can exploit the qualities that we have within the squad,” he elaborated. By tailoring tactics around player strengths, Arteta aims to create a formidable threat on the field, ensuring that every opportunity is capitalized on effectively.

Looking ahead to their upcoming match against Fulham, the Gunners will reunite with former academy player Emile Smith Rowe, who joined Craven Cottage over the summer. Arteta acknowledged the challenges that led to Smith Rowe’s departure, expressing gratitude for his contributions during his time at Arsenal. The decision to allow the young talent to leave was not taken lightly. “It was a very tough decision to let Emile go,” Arteta shared, underscoring the player’s instrumental role during pivotal moments in the club’s recent history. However, the manager recognized the need for players to get regular game time, especially considering Smith Rowe’s struggles with injuries.

Currently, Arsenal holds the third position in the Premier League standings, trailing behind Chelsea and league leaders Liverpool. The Gunners’ trajectory under Arteta showcases a drive to reclaim their dominance in English football. As they continue to build on their momentum, supporters are hopeful that the club can translate their set-piece expertise into broader success across all facets of the game. Fans can catch all the action from the Premier League and UEFA Champions League through platforms like TNT Sports and discovery+, ensuring they remain engaged with the progress of their rejuvenated squad.
