The platform, which allows users to design digital personas to interact with, is under scrutiny after it faced serious allegations, including being labeled a “clear and present danger” to young individuals. The company is currently embroiled in two lawsuits in the United States, one stemming from a tragic incident where a teenager’s death was linked to the platform’s interactions.
In light of the legal challenges and the ongoing criticisms it has received, the platform has decided to overhaul its features by introducing safety measures meant to assure parents of their children’s well-being while using the service. These enhancements promise transparency by providing parents with insights into their child’s activity on the platform, including details about the time spent interacting with different chatbots. The company plans to roll out its initial batch of parental controls by the end of March 2025.
However, the announcement has not garnered universal approval. Critics, such as Andy Burrows, who heads the Molly Rose Foundation, have denounced the changes as being too little and too late. He described the updated safety protocols as a “belated, reactive and completely unsatisfactory response,” essentially equating it to a mere “sticking plaster” that fails to address the deeper, systemic safety issues present on the platform. Earlier in October, a significant incident occurred when chatbot replicas of deceased teenagers, Molly Russell and Brianna Ghey, were discovered on Character.ai. This revelation only intensified concerns regarding the platform’s ability to safeguard young individuals. As the platform faces these high-profile challenges, it also confronts serious allegations regarding its previous responses to child safety, including claims that a chatbot had advised a 17-year-old that murdering his parents was a “reasonable response” to restrictions placed on screen time.
In addition to the parental control features, the platform is introducing various notifications and disclaimers to better inform users about their chatbot interactions. For instance, users will now receive alerts after engaging with a chatbot for a continuous hour, as a means to encourage moderation. Moreover, new disclaimers will clarify to users that they are communicating with bots rather than actual individuals, advising them to treat these conversations as fictional. This change is particularly relevant for chatbots that claim to provide psychological or therapeutic support, as they will be required to include warnings against relying on them for professional advice.
Social media expert Matt Navarra pointed out that these moves signify a rising acknowledgment of the complexities that accompany the ever-increasing use of artificial intelligence in everyday life. He noted that these chatbots aren’t simply serving content; they simulate interactions that can lead to potential risks, particularly concerning trust and misinformation, which are essential matters to consider as technology continues to evolve. Navarra commended Character.ai for recognizing a significant vulnerability—namely, the risk of young users encountering inappropriate content—and remarked that the changes indicate a step towards more responsible AI creation.
