Chris Wallace Bids Farewell to CNN, Embraces New Opportunities After 55 Years in Journalism

Chris Wallace, a prominent veteran journalist known for his extensive career in political journalism, has officially announced his departure from CNN, a decision he made public on a Monday evening. Wallace, who is 77 years old, previously signed a three-year contract with CNN in December 2021, but he expressed excitement about transitioning between roles after a lengthy 55-year career filled with various media engagements. In a statement to The Daily Beast, he shared, “this is the first time in 55 years I’ve been between jobs. I am actually excited and liberated by that.” His choice to step away comes at a time when TV news networks often reevaluate their talent in the aftermath of significant events, such as presidential election cycles.

The confirmation of Wallace’s exit came directly from CNN’s chief executive, Mark Thompson, who recognized Wallace’s esteemed reputation in the journalism field. In a statement regarding Wallace’s departure, Thompson noted, “Chris Wallace is one of the most respected political journalists in the news business with a unique track record across radio, print, broadcast television, cable television, and streaming.” He expressed gratitude for the expertise and commitment Wallace brought to his work at CNN, wishing him the best as he moves forward.

Wallace was an integral part of CNN’s recent election night coverage, which surprised many viewers given his quick exit afterward. Such transitions are not unusual, as television news anchors often find their contracts aligned with prominent national events. Networks can shift personnel in order to realign their programming and messaging. Wallace indicated his intention to pursue new opportunities beyond CNN, specifically mentioning interest in exploring streaming platforms or podcasting ventures. He reiterated his satisfaction with his time at CNN, asserting, “I have nothing but positive things to say. CNN has been very good to me.”

Although Wallace’s decision to depart marked a significant change in his career path, he chose not to disclose further details about his future plans. His sudden exit from CNN could be viewed in the context of a broader trend in the media landscape, wherein seasoned journalists are seeking new platforms to engage with their audiences.

Previously, Wallace made headlines back when he made the notable decision to leave “Fox News Sunday,” where he had been a staple for years. He cited discomfort with certain narratives propagated by specific programming at Fox, which he characterized as promoting “conspiracy and lies.” Following his departure from Fox News, Wallace joined CNN+, a streaming service that launched in early 2022. Unfortunately, CNN+’s short-lived status meant that shortly after its debut, it was closed down due to a change in the ownership structure of CNN’s parent company. Nonetheless, Wallace adapted to the situation and continued to host his talk show on Max, adding a Saturday morning panel discussion show to his lineup later on.

As Wallace transitions away from CNN, a spokesperson from the network confirmed that his existing shows would continue until the completion of their anticipated run later in the year. This closure signals the end of an era for Wallace at CNN, where he contributed significantly to the network’s political commentary and journalistic integrity. As the media landscape rapidly evolves, the coming months will be telling as to where Wallace, with his comprehensive background and skill set, will find his next endeavor in the ever-changing world of broadcasting.
