Collision Chaos: Allagrande Mapei Racing and Team Holcim PRB’s Dramatic Start to The Ocean Race Europe Ends in Disaster

The chaos of competitive sailing unraveled dramatically at the onset of The Ocean Race Europe as Team Holcim PRB and Allagrande Mapei Racing collided shortly after their departure from Kiel, Germany. Just minutes after the starting gun sounded, both teams faced a sobering return to the harbor, forcing them to evaluate the extent of the damage to their vessels and the grave implications for their future in this grueling race.

The atmosphere on the dock transformed significantly in the brief span of an hour. Enthusiastic crowds had gathered in Kiel to cheer on the fleet of seven boats as they embarked on the highly anticipated journey to Portsmouth, England. However, that excitement quickly turned to despondency when two competitors were seen returning, one with severe structural issues, while the other suffered critical damage to their sails. For sailors, returning to the pontoon before the race truly begins is a deeply unsettling experience; both crews are understandably anxious about their chances to rejoin the battle on the waters.

Participating in The Ocean Race Europe is a monumental achievement, requiring months of meticulous preparation, training, and collaboration. Describing the initial leg of this 4,500 nautical mile race as “complex” would be an understatement. With potential hazards ranging from crowded shipping channels to sprawling wind farms and unpredictable currents, the journey is fraught with challenges.

Time is of the essence for the teams—Allagrande Mapei Racing and Team Holcim PRB are faced with a pressing deadline. With the race’s subsequent legs relatively close together, they have only a few hours to devise a viable plan to repair their boats before logistical realities solidify their fate. According to race technical director Neil Cox, both teams have temporarily suspended their race, allowing for a potential return to leg one if they can sufficiently conduct repairs. “This would be an incredible outcome, but it’s too soon to ascertain the full picture,” he noted, expressing cautious optimism about their shore crews’ abilities to mend the boats.

The excitement that had infused the start of the race was largely due to the favorable wind conditions, which had picked up to 20 knots, allowing the cutting-edge 60-foot foiling vessels to showcase their impressive speed. For Ambrogio Beccaria, the Italian skipper of Allagrande Mapei Racing, the stakes were particularly high. His team had endured a tumultuous build-up to the race, having previously faced significant damage to their mast just a month earlier. Beccaria expressed relief and gratitude that the team had managed to be ready for the starting line against all odds, sharing how his initial apprehensions had given way to joy as the departure drew near.

However, that joy was short-lived. The day had quickly turned chaotic, primarily because of the ominous collision witnessed just a mile beyond the starting line. Carolijn Brouwer, a commentator for TNT Sports and also a crew member on Rosalin Kuiper’s Team Holcim PRB for the subsequent leg, described the scene as horrifying. With shock, she recounted the sight of a sizable hole in one of the boats and the visible crew members onboard, affirming their safety but recognizing the gravity of the situation. “This is a disaster, and I can’t emphasize that enough,” she lamented.

Upon dock arrival an hour later, teams were met with concerned faces of their technical staff who were ready to conduct thorough assessments of the damage. The following 24 hours would prove crucial as both crews endeavored to gauge the extent of their predicaments and strategize their next steps. As they embark on a process of evaluation and mending, the future of Allagrande Mapei Racing and Team Holcim PRB hangs in the balance. The Ocean Race Europe, set to resume from Kiel, Germany, poses not only a test of skill and endurance but also of resilience in the face of adversity. Viewers are keen to see how the teams recover, with anticipation building for the next chapter in this high-stakes nautical contest.
