Connecticut Angler Sets Record with Near 50-Pound Carp!

An avid angler, Brian Santos, made headlines recently by breaking a Connecticut state fishing record. Santos reeled in a massive common carp weighing an impressive 45 pounds and 5 ounces at Lake Lillinonah, located in Litchfield, Fairfield, and New Haven counties. The announcement was made on the Connecticut Fish and Wildlife Facebook page, celebrating Santos’s remarkable achievement. This record-breaking catch surpassed the previous record of 45 pounds and 1 ounce, also caught at Lake Lillinonah.

The Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) praised Santos for his impressive feat, declaring him the new state record-holder for catch-and-release common carp. The Facebook post showcasing Santos holding the enormous fish received an outpouring of congratulatory messages from fellow fishing enthusiasts. “That’s a beast!!!!” exclaimed one local admirer, while another commented, “Holy Moly! Congrats!”

Common carp, unlike Asian carp, are not considered an invasive species in Connecticut. Originally introduced to local waters as a food source during the Industrial Revolution, common carp have since established self-sustaining populations through natural reproduction. The DEEP website explains that common carp come in four distinct morphological forms, each representing adaptations or ‘morphs’ of the classic fully-scaled common carp. Despite their valuable role in the ecosystem, common carp are often labeled as “trash fish” due to their ability to thrive in polluted or murky waters.

While common carp may cause temporary turbidity issues by disturbing bottom sediments while foraging for food, they are not the primary cause of water quality problems in Connecticut. The DEEP website emphasizes that any long-term water clarity issues resulting from an overabundance of carp in specific areas can be managed through strategic conservation efforts. However, the department also highlights the importance of maintaining a balanced ecosystem to prevent any potential ecological disruptions.

Inquiries made by Fox News Digital to Connecticut Fish and Wildlife for further comments regarding Santos’s remarkable catch are pending. Despite the accolades and recognition received by Santos for his record-breaking achievement, the angler’s passion for fishing remains a driving force behind his continued success in the sport. With dedication, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for nature’s wonders, anglers like Santos continue to inspire others to pursue their dreams and push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of fishing.
