Connecticut Lawmakers Targeted by Bomb Threats During Thanksgiving Celebrations

In a disturbing turn of events, four Democratic representatives from Connecticut reported receiving bomb threats while they were home celebrating Thanksgiving with their loved ones. The representatives involved—Joe Courtney, Jim Himes, John Larson, and Jahana Hayes—publicly stated that they were targets of these alarming threats. These incidents led to law enforcement intervening, although they ultimately found no evidence of any explosive devices. Fortunately, all the legislators confirmed that their families are safe.

The timing of these threats is particularly notable, as they occurred just a day after several nominees and appointees from former President Donald Trump’s Cabinet were similarly targeted. These acts were condemned by Trump’s transition team, labeling them as “violent and un-American threats to their lives.” Such a correlation raises concerns about the increasing frequency of threats against public officials, a trend that has intensified in recent years. Officials familiar with the investigation into these calls shared with CNN that these threatening communications are not uncommon for lawmakers.

Understanding the source of these threats reveals a troubling pattern. Law enforcement has pointed out that many of these threatening calls often originate from individuals outside the country, who utilize scripts to convey a variety of threats. These acts are sometimes performed for mere attention or as a form of entertainment, highlighting the bizarre motivations behind such serious accusations. In light of these revelations, CNN reached out to the U.S. Capitol Police and local law enforcement agencies that responded to the bomb threats targeting the Connecticut representatives.

In their statements, Representatives Himes, Courtney, and Hayes strongly condemned not only the bomb threats aimed at them but all forms of political violence. Their sentiments echoed the broader sentiments of discontent with threats to democracy and public safety. Representative John Larson expressed gratitude that he and his fellow Connecticut lawmakers remained unharmed during these troubling times.

The FBI acknowledged awareness of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting nominees and appointees of the incoming administration. They confirmed they are collaborating with various law enforcement bodies to address these threats seriously. In their communication, they encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity immediately, emphasizing the acute need for vigilance in such alarming circumstances.

Former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, a contributor to CNN, underscored the normalization of threats in high-profile or divisive political roles. He stated that threats like those experienced by the Connecticut officials are now commonplace, explaining that those in such positions are well aware that a significant percentage of threats are baseless. Nonetheless, officials cannot ignore any potential danger—exercising caution is essential in evaluating the risks associated with such threats.

The term “swatting” emerged in connection to this discussion, referencing a dangerous criminal hoax that involves making false reports about a serious crime, like a mass shooting, to dispatch law enforcement to a specific location under false pretenses. This practice has been increasingly targeted at individuals holding various political views, demonstrating a wide ideological span in the nature of these threats. Notable figures such as special counsel Jack Smith and Judge Tanya Chutkan, who oversaw Trump’s federal election subversion case, have also been victims of similar threats, exemplifying the pervasive issue of security risks faced by public officials across the political spectrum.

As the political climate continues to heat up further, it remains crucial for lawmakers and the public to recognize the serious implications of threats against those in power, as these incidents not only threaten individual safety but also erode the foundational tenets of a democratic society. The need for robust security measures and public awareness is paramount in navigating these troubling times.
