England’s Euro 2024 Tactics Questioned by Ferdinand

In a Group C match at Euro 2024, England drew 1-1 against Denmark, with Rio Ferdinand criticizing the tactical inferiority of the English side. The Three Lions took an early lead with Harry Kane’s goal but allowed Denmark to equalize and dominate parts of the game. Former England striker Alan Shearer expressed that Denmark deserved to win, echoing Ferdinand’s concerns about Gareth Southgate’s tactics. Ferdinand highlighted the lack of direction and tactical prowess in England’s performance, emphasizing the need for a more proactive approach instead of defensive play.

Despite starting their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Serbia, England’s performances have raised questions about their potential to lift the trophy. With talented players like Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham in their squad, England are considered contenders for success. However, Ferdinand urged Southgate to enable his players to replicate their club-level performances on the international stage, emphasizing the importance of finding the right balance within the team. He pointed out that players like Foden and Bellingham may thrive in different roles than the ones they currently occupy in the England setup.

Shearer echoed Ferdinand’s sentiments, criticizing the lack of energy and creativity in England’s performance against Denmark. He highlighted the struggles of players like Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden to make an impact on the game, suggesting that they are not being utilized effectively by Southgate. Shearer specifically pointed out Harry Kane’s limited contribution beyond his goal, questioning the lack of support around him to create scoring opportunities. He proposed the inclusion of players like Anthony Gordon, known for his energy and ability to run behind defences, to provide Kane with the necessary support in attack.

The concerns raised by Ferdinand and Shearer reflect a broader unease about England’s current form and tactical approach at Euro 2024. Despite having talented players in their ranks, the team has struggled to produce cohesive and dominant performances, leading to doubts about their ability to compete with the top teams in the tournament. Southgate’s tactics have been called into question, with calls for a more proactive and balanced approach that maximizes the potential of the squad.

As England look ahead to their remaining matches in the group stage and beyond, they will need to address the tactical shortcomings highlighted by pundits and former players. Finding the right balance between defensive solidity and attacking flair will be crucial for their success in the tournament. With talented players like Foden, Bellingham, and Kane in their ranks, England have the potential to make a deep run at Euro 2024, but it will require a re-evaluation of their tactical approach and a more proactive mindset on the field. Only time will tell if Southgate can make the necessary adjustments to guide England to glory in the tournament.
