Enzo Fernandez Reflects on Tough Start at Chelsea: “I Was Not Satisfied, But Now I Feel Very Good

Enzo Fernandez, the talented Argentine midfielder, has openly discussed his challenging beginnings at Chelsea Football Club, stressing that his substantial transfer fee should not overshadow his struggles upon arrival. The player transferred to Chelsea in January 2023 from Benfica for a staggering British-record fee of £106.8 million. However, his time at Stamford Bridge has been marred by injury troubles, including a significant bout with a groin issue that required surgery in April, causing him to miss a substantial 10 matches during the previous season.

Reflecting on his experiences with the team, Fernandez admitted that his initial period at Chelsea was fraught with difficulties. With the club undergoing a tumultuous phase marked by managerial changes, including the departures of Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino, he highlighted the impact of these transitions on his performance. He candidly shared that the first year and a half were particularly challenging, characterized by injuries, shifts in coaching staff, and a lack of overall team success.

During an interview with ESPN, he expressed, “When I arrived, it was very difficult, the first year and a half here: change of coaches, the club wasn’t doing well, personal injuries.” This statement showcases his acknowledgment of the multiple hurdles he faced simultaneously. Despite the weight of expectations tied to his record transfer, Fernandez made it clear that he did not allow this pressure to overwhelm him. “It [the price tag] didn’t affect me. I tried to take it responsibly, with enjoyment, without pressure,” he asserted, emphasizing his determination to focus on his performance rather than the financial implications of his move.

In his recent statements, the 23-year-old midfielder indicated that he was not satisfied with his previous outputs but remains hopeful about the future. He told reporters, “I was not satisfied with what I had been showing,” which reflects a level of self-awareness and a desire for improvement. After dealing with multiple setbacks, Fernandez now feels he is on the upswing, stating, “I tried to move forward but today I feel very good, as does the team, and we hope to continue on this path.” His optimism highlights a newfound resilience and a commitment to contributing positively to Chelsea’s future.

The tide appears to be turning for Fernandez as he has recently enjoyed a surge in form, evidenced by his impressive performances which included setting up four goals in Chelsea’s overwhelming 8-0 victory against FC Noah in the UEFA Conference League. His contributions have culminated in seven goal involvements across his last seven domestic matches, signifying a notable improvement in his efficiency on the pitch.

A significant factor in this resurgence is the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca, who has revitalized Fernandez’s approach to the game. He commented on the coach’s influence, stating, “I learned the position in which I had to play. Over time I got the idea of what the coach wanted.” This relationship with Maresca seems to have fostered a stronger tactical understanding that has enabled Fernandez to grasp the nuances of his role effectively.

Moreover, Fernandez praised the team’s collective spirit, noting that “the team has shown a very strong character, always working and with humility and showing that great things can be achieved.” His belief in the capabilities of his teammates suggests a growing confidence within the squad, which is pivotal as they prepare for upcoming challenges in both domestic and European competitions.

In conclusion, while Enzo Fernandez’s journey at Chelsea started on a rocky note, his resilience, coupled with supportive management and a rejuvenated team ethos, has positioned him to capitalize on future opportunities. There remains an acknowledgment that the path ahead is long, yet Fernandez’s current trajectory suggests that he is ready to embrace it and play a significant role in Chelsea’s ongoing ambitions to reclaim their status as a dominant force in English football.
