The European Championship is currently underway in Germany, showcasing some of the best strikers in the world competing for individual honours at Euro 2024. Among these top players is Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds the record for the most goals scored in the competition and was the Golden Boot winner at Euro 2020 with five goals. The Portuguese star will be looking to add to his impressive tally of 14 goals overall in the Euros.

In the previous edition of the tournament, Ronaldo edged out Czech Republic forward Patrik Schick for the Golden Boot on a tiebreaker, as both players had scored five goals but Ronaldo had more assists. Before them, Antoine Griezmann of France claimed the honours in 2016 with six goals, while Fernando Torres, David Villa, and Milan Baros were the Golden Boot winners in the past three tournaments. Ronaldo and Griezmann both have the opportunity to become the first two-time winners of the Golden Boot in Euros history.

One of the legends of the European Championship, Michel Platini holds the record for the most goals scored in a single edition of the tournament with nine goals in 1984. The competition at Euro 2024 is fierce, with players like Georges Mikautadze, Jamal Musiala, Ivan Schranz, and Niclas Fullkrug leading the Golden Boot standings with two goals each. Various others have scored one goal so far in the tournament, and the race for the Golden Boot is far from over.

In the event of a tie in the number of goals scored by two or more players at the end of the tournament, the tiebreaker will be determined by the player with the most assists. If there is still a tie, the award will go to the player who has played the fewest minutes. This tiebreaker format was introduced in 2008, prior to which the Golden Boot award was shared among the top scorers.

Looking back at past editions of the European Championship, the list of Golden Boot winners showcases some of the greatest goal scorers in the history of the tournament. From Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann to Fernando Torres, David Villa, and Milan Baros, these players have left their mark on the competition with their goal-scoring prowess. With a rich history of top goal scorers, the race for the Golden Boot at Euro 2024 promises to be thrilling until the very end.

As fans around the world eagerly follow the action at Euro 2024, they can catch every moment of the tournament on discovery+, the streaming home of the Olympic Games. From the battle for the Golden Boot to the quest for national glory, Paris 2024 this summer promises to be an unforgettable sporting spectacle that will captivate audiences worldwide.
