Ford Recalls 694,000 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs Over Fire Hazard Concerns

In a significant safety announcement, Ford Motor Company has issued a recall affecting over 694,000 vehicles, specifically the Bronco Sport and Escape models. This move comes in response to a serious fire hazard that has been identified in these compact SUVs. The recall highlights an ongoing issue where a fuel injector may develop cracks and subsequently leak fuel, posing a potential fire risk to both drivers and passengers.

The vehicles involved in this recall encompass the Bronco Sports manufactured from the years 2021 through 2024, as well as the Escapes produced between 2020 and 2022. Both models are equipped with 1.5-liter engines, and it has been noted that the defect could lead to fuel leaking onto hot engine components. The implications of this can be dire, as the recall notice warns that the conditions could substantially heighten the risk of a fire occurring.

Currently, Ford does not have a definitive permanent solution to rectify the fuel injector issue. However, the company is taking immediate steps to address the situation. As part of the recall process, letters informing owners of affected Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles are set to be dispatched starting August 18. In the interim, Ford dealerships will provide a temporary fix by updating the engine control software without any cost to the vehicle owners. This software update is aimed at providing some level of safety while the company formulates a more complete remedy.

The potential consequences of a cracked fuel injector are severe. The recall notice details that the defect allows fuel to leak at an accelerated rate. Such leakage can inadvertently come into contact with other engine components that are subject to high temperatures, which greatly increases the likelihood of a fire igniting within the vehicle.

Ford has been aware of this issue for some time and has previously attempted to resolve it. Initial remedies were rolled out starting in November 2022, which included new software designed to detect fuel leakages and subsequently disable the high-pressure fuel pump. This intervention would also reduce engine power to mitigate the risk of fire. However, in July 2024, the company encountered a troubling incident where they had to buy back a vehicle that had unfortunately caught fire. Subsequent examinations revealed a cracked fuel injector even though the vehicle had been subjected to one of the earlier remedies. Ford noted that fire damage complicated their ability to ascertain the precise cause of the blaze.

The process of addressing this safety concern led Ford to further investigations and subsequent conversations with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). After reviewing multiple instances and potential risks associated with the fuel injector crack, the decision was made to formally issue this recall.

In terms of communication with vehicle owners, Ford plans to send out a second letter when a final remedy becomes available. They encourage vehicle owners with concerns to reach out to Ford’s customer service for assistance pertaining to the recall. For inquiries, owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, using recall number 25S76 as a reference.

This recall exemplifies the automotive industry’s commitment to safety and accountability. While the urgency of the recall suggests a serious risk, Ford’s proactive stance in issuing notifications and providing interim solutions showcases their dedication to ensuring the safety of their customers. Owners of affected vehicles are encouraged to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions until the issue is fully resolved.
