Glenn Hoddle Praises Tottenham’s Strong Defense: ‘If They Keep This Up, They Can Go Somewhere!’

Glenn Hoddle, a prominent figure in Tottenham Hotspur’s history as both a player and manager, recently shared his optimistic assessment of the team’s performance during their match against Eintracht Frankfurt. Hoddle’s praise specifically highlighted the defensive effort exhibited by Spurs, noting that such a strong defensive display might signify a turning point for the team. “If Tottenham carry on defending like they did at Eintracht Frankfurt, they can go somewhere,” he stated confidently. This sentiment underscores the importance of a solid defensive foundation, which Hoddle believes is essential for the team’s success this season.

Hoddle’s analysis of the match, which he described during TNT Sports’ coverage, shed light on the confidence boost that comes from delivering a disciplined defensive performance. He remarked, “It’s going to give them a bunch of confidence. It keeps the season going, which is so, so important.” The former manager was particularly impressed with how the team not only started strong but also managed to control the game during crucial moments. By creating scoring opportunities while maintaining a tight defense, Tottenham secured a much-needed win.

The crux of Hoddle’s argument lies in the team’s clean sheet, which had been elusive for some time. He articulated that the foundation of Tottenham’s potential lies in their ability to defend cohesively. “If they defend like that, this team can go somewhere,” he reiterated, emphasizing the necessity of a unified defensive effort. Moreover, he expressed confidence in the attacking talent available to the squad, stating, “At the end of the day, they’ve got the players on the pitch that can create in the attacking third.” Hoddle concluded by highlighting the overall performance, which showcased the team’s ability to perform well under pressure, both offensively and defensively.

In the context of their domestic league performance, Tottenham has faced challenges throughout the season under the management of Ange Postecoglou, currently finding themselves in 15th place in the Premier League. However, the success in European competitions offers a glimmer of hope for fans and players alike. The match against Frankfurt, where Tottenham emerged victorious, has positioned them for further glory in Europe, particularly with aspirations of competing in the UEFA Champions League.

Another ex-Tottenham player, Les Ferdinand, echoed Hoddle’s sentiments regarding their professional display against Frankfurt. He praised every player for their commitment, stating, “To a man, every single player put in a shift tonight.” Ferdinand acknowledged the likelihood of Frankfurt applying pressure during the second half and commended Spurs for handling that pressure effectively. He found the result significant, especially considering the club’s history, as they prepare to move forward to the semi-finals of the competition.

Owen Hargreaves, another TNT Sports pundit, weighed in on the impact that lifting the trophy in Bilbao next month could have on the team’s morale and future, especially considering Tottenham’s drought of silverware since winning the League Cup in 2008. He emphasized the importance of simply getting the job done: “There are no pictures on the trophy, there are no stats on the trophy. Just find a way to get the job done.” Hargreaves highlighted the team’s defensive resilience during the match, particularly the way they held together as a unit, making it clear that success doesn’t always come from maintaining high possession statistics.

As Tottenham looks ahead, the combination of effective defending, determination, and team cohesion will be critical to their aspirations in both domestic and European competitions. For fans, the promise of transitioning from a challenging league season to potential European glory creates an atmosphere of hope and anticipation. The performances against formidable opponents like Eintracht Frankfurt may well serve as a launchpad for Spurs, aiming to restore their legacy as a leading force in football.
