In a recent statement, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer suggested that President Joe Biden should consider taking a cognitive test to address concerns about his mental fitness following a lackluster debate performance in June. When pressed by CNN’s Abby Phillip, Whitmer stated, “I don’t think that it would hurt.”
While acknowledging that the debate was not a great success for Biden, Whitmer emphasized that he continues to fight for the American public and cares about others more than himself. She also pushed back on calls for Biden to step aside from his 2024 campaign, pointing out the high stakes involved.
During an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, Biden defended his performance, stating that it was not evidence of a serious condition. When asked if he had undergone cognitive tests or an exam by a neurologist, Biden responded that he had not, adding, “They said I’m good.”
Whitmer’s comments come as some Democrats question the potential impact of Biden’s reelection bid on down-ballot races this fall. Despite speculation that she could enter the race if Biden steps aside, Whitmer expressed support for the president and expressed concerns about diverting attention away from the threat posed by Donald Trump.
When asked about potential retribution from Trump if he wins, Whitmer highlighted the Supreme Court’s recent ruling granting presidents absolute immunity from prosecution for core official acts. She warned against the abuse of power and misuse of authority, particularly in light of this ruling.
