India Sets Monstrous 534-Run Target as Australia Faces Early Collapse in Perth Test Showdown

India is in a commanding position in the ongoing Test match against Australia, having set a staggering target of 534 runs by the end of day three in Perth. The Indian team concluded their second innings at an impressive score of 487 for the loss of 6 wickets, cemented by brilliant batting performances that included a splendid century from star player Virat Kohli. This robust performance followed a reasonable lead gained from a dominating first innings.

As the match progressed, it became clear that the Australian side was under intense pressure to respond. Unfortunately for them, their innings started abysmally as they lost three wickets in the opening five overs, languishing at just 12 runs for 3 wickets before the day’s play concluded. This spotlights the contrasting dynamics between the two teams, with Australia struggling under the monumental target set by India.

Day two of the Test had ended with India firmly established at 172 runs without losing any wickets, showcasing their dominance after a brilliant start. Opening the batting on day three, KL Rahul steered the Indian innings with a commendable total of 62 runs. His opening stand helped propel the score to 201 before he was dismissed by Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Following him, Devdutt Padikkal contributed a useful 25 runs but was caught by Steven Smith off the bowling of Mitchell Starc.

A marvelous highlight of the innings was produced by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who played magnificently to make 161 runs before being removed by Smith. His dismissal left India at 313 for 3, setting the stage for further contributions. Rishabh Pant added some brisk runs, moving the team’s score to 320 before being stumped, while Dhruv Jurel followed shortly after. Washington Sundar, a crucial player in the lineup, fell victim to Nathan Lyon, who bowled him out, leaving the Indian side in a comfortable yet precarious position at 410 for 6.

The Indian team ultimately declared their innings at 487 for 6, banking on Kohli’s century along with a contribution of 38 runs from Nitish Kumar Reddy. This declaration set Australia a challenging target. Following the interval, disaster struck for the Australian team as Nathan McSweeney was caught lbw, signaling the start of a dismal second innings. With that initial blow, the Australians were left scrambling at 0 for 1, and the situation only worsened when nightwatchman Pat Cummins followed suit, becoming another victim caught by Kohli.

As wickets continued to tumble, Marnus Labuschagne was soon dismissed via lbw, which left the host team in a dire situation at 12 for 3 by the end of play. This poor performance seemed to weigh heavily on Australia’s captain, Alex Carey, who admitted that day three had proved challenging. Despite the disarray, Carey clung onto the belief that there were runs to be made in Perth, emphasizing the potential for recovery with a determined approach in the upcoming days. He stated, “It has been a tough three days, there is no denying that… we will come out and try to score some big runs.”

On a personal note, Kohli expressed his appreciation for the support of his wife, who was present in the crowd, acknowledging her role throughout his career challenges. “I take pride in performing for my country,” he affirmed, recognizing the emotional significance of their shared journey.
