His son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, announced the news on Instagram, saying, “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think [he was] one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.”
Donald Sutherland had a prolific career that spanned over 60 years and included nearly 200 film and TV credits. He earned an Emmy for his role in the 1995 TV movie “Citizen X” and received two Golden Globes. Sutherland was known for his intense on-screen presence and appeared in a wide variety of genres, from war movies like “The Dirty Dozen” to comedies like “Animal House.”
The actor, who was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, had endured several health issues as a child, including polio. He attended the University of Toronto before pursuing a career in acting. Sutherland was married three times and had five children, including actors Kiefer and Rachel Sutherland.
In addition to his film work, Sutherland was recognized with numerous awards during his career, including an honorary award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences board and the Order of Canada. His final projects included the space thriller “Moonfall” and the western drama “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.”
