In breaking news, Lena Dunham has announced her departure from the “Polly Pocket” movie project after working on the script for three years. The “Girls” star revealed this development in an interview with the New Yorker on Tuesday.
CNN had previously reported that Dunham was set to write and direct the film, which was one of Mattel’s projects greenlit following the success of “Barbie” last year. Lily Collins was also attached to star in the film at the time.
Dunham cited Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” as a key factor in her decision to leave the project, praising it for its mass appeal and unique direction. She expressed that her next film must be something that only she could create, and she did not feel that way about “Polly Pocket.”
When contacted by CNN, a Mattel spokesperson confirmed that “Polly Pocket” is still in active development and expressed well wishes for Dunham. The popular toy line features a small doll and accessories that come in a makeup compact.
It is worth noting that Mattel has other feature films in the works, including adaptations of “Hot Wheels” and “Barney.” CNN’s Elizabeth Wagmeister contributed to this report.
