Maine Woman Nearly Swallowed by Quicksand on Beach

A Maine woman, Jamie Acord, had a frightening experience while walking along the water’s edge at Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg, New England. Fortunately, she was accompanied by her husband, Patrick Acord, who witnessed the incident. Jamie suddenly found herself sinking into the sand up to her hips, a situation they later discovered was due to quicksand.

According to Patrick Acord, he and his wife were walking side by side collecting trash on the beach when Jamie dropped about 2.5 feet into the quicksand. Despite the initial shock, Patrick was able to quickly pull her out of the sand trap before more sand could pour back in, ensuring her safety. Jamie described the sensation of sinking, saying she couldn’t feel the bottom and couldn’t find her footing, creating a sense of panic in the moment.

Although the idea of being trapped in quicksand may seem like a movie cliche, the incident at Popham Beach State Park highlights the real-life dangers posed by beach dynamics. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry has published articles detailing the dramatic effects of sand movement on Popham Beach, resulting in extreme shoreline changes and dune erosion. The mixture of fine sand, clay, and saltwater that constitutes quicksand has a density of about 2 grams per milliliter, compared to the human density of about 1 gram per milliliter. This density disparity allows people to remain buoyant and wriggle themselves to safety when caught in supersaturated sand like quicksand, preventing them from sinking further.

After the incident, Patrick and Jamie Acord consulted with a park ranger who confirmed that similar complaints had been received, but none as severe as Jamie’s ordeal. Visitors to Popham Beach are now being urged to communicate with park staff to stay informed about area conditions and receive safety tips, especially if they are unfamiliar with the surroundings or if conditions have recently changed. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry issued an advisory following Jamie Acord’s experience, emphasizing the importance of taking precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to Popham Beach State Park.

In response to the incident, the government organization offered safety tips for anyone who might find themselves stuck in sand. These tips include staying calm, ditching extra weight, leaning back to distribute weight evenly, moving slowly to avoid sinking further, and crawling to safety if standing up is not an option. By following these guidelines, individuals can increase their chances of escaping from a situation involving quicksand or supersaturated sand.

Overall, the quicksand incident at Popham Beach serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of beach environments and the importance of being vigilant and prepared while enjoying outdoor activities. By staying informed, taking necessary precautions, and remaining calm in challenging situations, beach visitors can ensure their safety and well-being during their time at the state park.
