Marc Marquez’s ‘Second-Hand’ Struggles Spark Concerns After ‘Massive’ Crashes at Dutch GP, as Guintoli Tips Bagnaia for a Comeback!

At the MotoGP Grand Prix Netherlands, the events of Friday’s action were a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of motorcycle racing, particularly as the riders faced challenging track conditions. Notably, Sylvain Guintoli, a former Grand Prix racer and now commentator, made an observation about Marc Marquez’s form after he succumbed to a couple of crashes during the practice sessions. Guintoli remarked that Marquez seemed to appear “second hand” following his spills, which raised alarm given the Spaniard’s notorious history with injuries. His teammate Francesco Bagnaia was tipped as a strong contender amidst the uncertain circumstances surrounding Marquez’s health.

During the morning practice session, Marquez experienced a particularly tough moment when he crashed and appeared to be in significant pain, gingerly examining his left hand and arm, while also showing signs of discomfort in his shoulder. This situation immediately triggered concerns given Marquez’s history with injuries — a factor that has frequently impacted his racing career. Despite the initial worries, Marquez returned for the afternoon session but unfortunately, he crashed again, reportedly winding himself yet still showing no serious indications that he’d be sidelined for the remainder of the weekend.

Ai Ogura, a rookie for Aprilia, also became one of the day’s most notable victims. His crash resulted in a stunning spectacle as his bike burst into flames—a sight alarming enough to cause concern among spectators and teams alike. Fortunately, Ogura emerged from the incident relatively unscathed. Guintoli shared his analysis about the precarious situations many riders faced on that day, highlighting the role of tire choices and track conditions.

Guintoli discussed the rampant crashes during practice, noting the unusually high number of incidents that transpired in just six minutes. He attributed this to the riders opting to work with the medium tires, which seemed to provide inadequate grip given the track temperatures. “The issue was everyone opted to try the medium front, and it happened to be a little too hard for the track temperature,” Guintoli explained, shedding light on the challenges faced by the riders in optimizing their setups. He also noted that the unique design of the track—characterized by lengthy corners—contributed to difficulties, as riders grappled with rear-wheel spin and high-siding incidents, the latter being an abrupt flip of the bike that can send riders tumbling.

Despite the challenges, Guintoli expressed optimism about Bagnaia’s potential for the rest of the weekend. Although he acknowledged Bagnaia’s struggles earlier in the season, he highlighted the rider’s competitive edge shown at the previous race in Italy. “Here we expect the same,” Guintoli stated, hopeful that Bagnaia could harness that aggression in his riding style, particularly as the Italian team continued to work on improvements for handling and feel on the bike.

As the weather fluctuated over the weekend, Davide Tardozzi, the Ducati Lenovo team principal, shared insights about how environmental conditions demonstrated an impact on the racing experience. Tardozzi remarked on the cold surface, stating, “Sometimes the tyre needs time to get hot,” which was a contributing factor to the series of falls experienced by riders. Despite the wear and tear of the day’s events, he expressed confidence in Marquez’s resilience, noting, “Champions don’t feel pain,” suggesting that the seasoned competitor would continue unyielded in his pursuit of excellence.

With the remaining weekend action available to fans live on TNT Sports and Discovery+, the atmosphere remained charged with anticipation, particularly concerning the outcomes of riders like Bagnaia and Marquez, as the MotoGP spectacle unfolded in the Netherlands, revealing both the intense physical and strategic demands of motorcycle racing at such high levels.
