Melbourne Synagogue Firebombed: Worshippers Flee as Prime Minister Condemns “Act of Hate

On a recent Friday morning, a shocking incident unfolded at the Adass Israel synagogue located in Ripponlea, a suburb in the southeastern area of Melbourne, Australia. Worshippers at the synagogue were abruptly forced to flee as the building was engulfed in flames, a devastating event that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unequivocally condemned as an “act of hate.” This fire not only resulted in physical destruction but also instigated fear within the local Jewish community.

Firefighters received a distress call shortly after 4:00 AM local time, responding swiftly to find the synagogue fully ablaze upon their arrival. Reports indicate that a few individuals were present at the site for morning prayers, and witnesses recounted terrifying details of firebombs being thrown at the building. Sadly, the incident resulted in at least one injury, and the significant damage inflicted by the flames rendered the synagogue unsafe for its congregation.

In the aftermath of the incident, police indicated that they suspect the fire was intentionally ignited, although they remain open-minded regarding the motives behind this hateful act. Prime Minister Albanese, in a statement addressing the community, described the act as one designed to instill fear among the worshippers and broader local community. He expressed his outrage at the violence and destruction afflicting a place of worship and made it clear that there is zero tolerance for antisemitism in Australia. He confirmed that the Australian Federal Police are stepping in to assist local authorities as they investigate this heinous act.

The investigation is ongoing, with Victoria Police confirming that they have not yet pinpointed the precise cause of the fire. An arson chemist has been dispatched to the scene to examine the circumstances surrounding the event. Detective Inspector Chris Murray revealed that a witness alleged to have seen two masked individuals spreading an accelerant inside the synagogue. He urged anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage from around the vicinity, to come forward and aid in the investigation.

Notably, members of the synagogue have shared harrowing accounts of what transpired during the attack. Benjamin Klein, a board member at the synagogue, recounted how those inside heard violent banging on the doors and windows accompanied by the presence of flaming liquids. Another individual, Yumi Friedman, described a scene of chaos where a window was smashed, sending shards of glass flying. In his attempt to help combat the blaze, Mr. Friedman experienced burns from a doorknob when he tried to enter back into the synagogue.

Det. Insp. Murray addressed the press amidst frustration expressed by attendees, asserting that law enforcement would dedicate significant resources to apprehend those responsible for this despicable act. He reassured the community that they are committed to restoring a sense of safety by increasing patrols in the area, allowing worshippers to return to their places of worship without pervasive fear.

Jewish community leaders, such as Daniel Aghion—president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry—are increasingly alarmed by this incident, deeming it as indicative of a troubling rise in antisemitic sentiments across Australia. Mr. Aghion noted that the community has been bracing for such an escalation, highlighting an unsettling reality that underscores the vital need for solidarity and vigilance against racism and hatred.

In conclusion, this harrowing episode at the Adass Israel synagogue has reminded Australia of the challenges still faced by minority communities. It has sparked nationwide dialogues on the urgent need to combat hate crimes, as the Jewish community calls for action to guard against such acts of violence and discrimination. The unfolding investigation will hopefully deliver justice and restore peace to those whose lives have been thrust into turmoil by this senseless act.
