Meta Partners with Conservative Influencer Robby Starbuck to Combat AI Bias After Defamation Lawsuit

In a notable and controversial partnership, Robby Starbuck, a conservative influencer and vocal opponent of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, has taken on a new role as an advisor to Meta, the tech giant behind platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. This collaboration aims to address concerns regarding bias in Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI) systems, marking a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue about the role of technology in political and ideological discourse.

The genesis of this relationship can be traced back to a lawsuit that Starbuck filed against Meta earlier this year. In his April complaint, Starbuck accused the company of defamation after its AI chatbot allegedly produced false statements claiming he was involved in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Meta’s subsequent settlement announcement on a recent Friday included a joint statement from Starbuck and Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, asserting that both parties had satisfactorily resolved the matter.

According to the joint statement, Starbuck’s engagement with Meta has already led to significant improvements in the accuracy of Meta’s AI systems, particularly in relation to ideological and political biases. The company committed to continued collaboration with Starbuck over the coming months, focusing on reducing the risk of AI “hallucinations”—instances where AI provides inaccurate or misleading responses to user inquiries. This proactive approach aims to enhance the reliability of the AI while addressing broader societal concerns regarding bias in technological platforms.

Robby Starbuck’s background adds another layer of complexity to this partnership. Once a Hollywood music video director, Starbuck transitioned into the political arena and gained visibility due to his campaigns targeting large U.S. corporations for their DEI programs and support for social causes, such as Pride events and climate change initiatives. His activism has resonated particularly among conservative consumers and has led to claims of influencing companies like Harley-Davidson and John Deere to reconsider their DEI policies.

Importantly, this alliance comes at a time when Meta is intensifying its focus on developing AI technologies, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently highlighting that approximately 1 billion users engage with Meta AI monthly. Starbuck’s involvement is particularly noteworthy given the current political context; his advisory role falls in line with a broader executive mandate issued by former President Donald Trump, which seeks to eliminate perceived “woke” ideologies from federal AI applications. This executive order emphasizes the need for historical accuracy and scientific integrity in AI systems, echoing Starbuck’s own calls for neutrality in corporate social stances.

Although Starbuck initially sought a substantial $5 million in damages as part of his lawsuit, the financial specifics of the settlement have not been disclosed. Meta has refrained from commenting on whether Starbuck would receive compensation for his advisory work or if other advisors with comparable political perspectives are engaged. In recent statements to the media, Starbuck emphasized that his primary goal in pursuing this settlement was to rectify the issues that had arisen out of Meta’s AI output, rather than to pursue monetary compensation.

In light of this new trajectory, Meta also seems to be undergoing a substantial ideological shift, visibly aligning with more conservative values over the past year. Notably, the appointment of Joel Kaplan reflects this change, as Kaplan has ties to the George W. Bush administration, and the company’s termination of partnerships with third-party fact-checkers has attracted scrutiny for its perceived bias.

Starbuck’s recent comments suggest that he sees his advisory position as a crucial step towards achieving fairness and ideological balance in AI systems. He articulated his desire to ensure that conservative voices are represented in discussions around AI, aiming for a future where technological advancements are devoid of ideological bias. This evolving dialogue underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding technology, politics, and social accountability, revealing conflicting views about what constitutes fairness in today’s digital landscape.

Lastly, it’s important to note the contributions of Nathaniel Meyersohn and Lisa Eadicicco in reporting on this development, indicative of the collaborative efforts to cover significant changes in corporate and technological governance. The implications of Starbuck’s advisory role at Meta will undoubtedly continue to unfold as the company ventures deeper into the realm of artificial intelligence amidst a polarized political climate.
