Mexico’s President Sheinbaum Rejects Trump’s Claim of Migration Deal: “We Will Not Close Our Borders

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has recently stepped into the spotlight, refuting claims made by President-elect Donald Trump, asserting that an agreement was made to curb migration towards the United States. This miscommunication stemmed from a phone conversation between the two leaders, during which Trump proclaimed on his social media platform that Sheinbaum had consented to stop migration through Mexico into the United States, resulting in the closure of the Southern Border.

In response, Sheinbaum clarified Mexico’s stance, emphasizing that their position is not to closure borders but rather to manage migration in alignment with human rights considerations. She articulated that the focus is on addressing migration while ensuring respect for those involved. This public clarification marks a significant moment in the diplomatic dialogue between the United States and Mexico, especially as it pertains to immigration issues, a topic that has long been a flashpoint in U.S. politics.

In the wake of Trump’s assertions, he also made headlines with threats of imposing tariffs—specifically a sweeping 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on products from China. Such drastic tariffs were proposed to be enforced until there is a significant reduction in illegal immigration and the ongoing drug trafficking issues impacting the United States, specifically the smuggling of fentanyl from China.

Sheinbaum did not shy away from addressing these potential trade wars, indicating that Mexico would retaliate in kind if the U.S. moved forward with tariff implementations. “If there are U.S. tariffs, Mexico would also raise tariffs,” she declared during a press conference, showcasing her commitment to a strong Mexican economic response. Alongside her, Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard emphasized the need for regional cooperation in the face of such unilateral trade threats, calling Trump’s tariff proposals a self-destructive move that could breach the USMCA trade deal—an agreement that Trump himself negotiated in 2018 with Mexico and Canada.

In the backdrop of these discussions, Sheinbaum had earlier portrayed her conversation with Trump as constructive on X, stating that they had a positive dialogue concerning Mexico’s strategy towards managing migration. However, it seems their interpretations diverged significantly, with Trump later claiming on his platform, Truth Social, that Mexico would halt migration to the U.S. border immediately.

Sheinbaum reiterated her dedication to a comprehensive strategy to address migration, clearly stating that Mexico’s intent is to “build bridges between governments and peoples,” rather than fortify borders. This sentiment, however, coincides with increasing apprehensions and challenges faced by migrants, as internal deportation practices initiated by Mexico—which involve relocating non-Mexicans far from the U.S. border—have left many migrants depleted of resources and potential will to continue their journeys.

The situation remains fluid, with significant implications not only for U.S.-Mexico relations but for Canada as well. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau convened an emergency meeting with ten provincial leaders to strategize a unified response to Trump’s tariff threats, echoing concerns about the negotiation dynamics under the incoming administration. Differing sentiments within Canadian leadership, exemplified by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s reservations about Trudeau’s ability to handle negotiations with Trump, highlight the complexities of regional diplomacy at play.

Across the Pacific, reactions from China to Trump’s announced tariffs had yet to emerge, though a Chinese official suggested the futility of engaging in a trade war, recognizing the potential for mutual losses. The intertwined issues of illegal immigration and trade are poised to be central challenges for Trump once he assumes office, particularly given his campaign promises focused on strict immigration control and border security.

As events unfold, the prospect of escalating tensions and discussions surrounding migration, tariffs, and regional cooperation paints an intricate picture of the future of U.S.-Mexico-Canada relations, with both immediate impacts and long-term consequences for all stakeholders involved.
