Despite his escalating enthusiasm regarding potential wealth, Hugh did not initially realize the negative consequences of his fixation on the chatbot. Eventually, he suffered a breakdown that made him recognize his detachment from reality. Although he still appreciates the utility of AI tools, he emphasizes the importance of grounding oneself in reality through conversations with friends or professionals.
The discourse surrounding AI psychosis is echoed by specialists in the medical field. Dr. Susan Shelmerdine, an academic and medical imaging doctor at Great Ormond Street Hospital, indicated that the way people engage with AI could soon become a relevant topic within medical assessments, similar to inquiries about smoking or alcohol consumption. The concern is that as AI usage becomes more pervasive, it may produce a generation of individuals whose cognitive processes become distorted under the influence of “ultra-processed information,” compromising their mental well-being.
