Musk’s Feud with Apple Heats Up as He Calls OpenAI’s Altman a ‘Liar’ and Threatens Legal Action

In a dramatic escalation of their ongoing feud, Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), has threatened legal action against tech giant Apple. Musk’s assertion claims that Apple’s practices have made it “impossible” for applications to compete fairly with ChatGPT, the flagship product of OpenAI, a company co-founded by Musk. This conflict is not merely a corporate spat but reflects deeper tensions between two influential figures in the tech world.

Musk’s attack escalated when he publicly labeled Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, a “liar.” This accusation stems from Altman’s claims that Musk was leveraging his own social media platform to promote his personal business interests. This rhetorical clash underlines the complicated history the two men share, characterized by both collaboration and intense rivalry since Musk’s departure from OpenAI.

The friction has magnified recently with Apple’s announcement of a partnership with ChatGPT earlier this year, sparking questions about the fairness of app promotion in its App Store. However, despite Musk’s claims of favoritism, several AI applications, including DeepSeek and Perplexity, have successfully reached the top of the App Store rankings, indicating a competitive environment. Nevertheless, Musk’s frustrations underline a sense of betrayal, particularly given his significant investment in AI and his initial support for OpenAI’s vision.

In a further jab at Apple, Musk openly questioned why it has not featured X or Grok, his AI app, in the coveted “Must Have” section of the App Store. Musk claims that X, which he asserts is the number one news app globally, and Grok, which he states is the fifth most popular app, deserve better visibility. Interestingly, as of the time of Musk’s posts, ChatGPT ranks as the most downloaded free app in the UK, with Grok following closely in third place, while X languishes outside the top 40.

As this saga unfolds, Sam Altman has taken notice of Musk’s comments, linking a tech newsletter article that shed light on Musk’s alleged manipulation of the X platform to enhance the visibility of his own posts. This development raises further questions about the integrity of social media algorithms and the potential conflicts of interest that may arise when tech moguls are involved.

The roots of the animosity between Musk and Altman can be traced back several years. Their rivalry is marked by a series of lawsuits, public disputes, and personal attacks. It germinated from Musk’s disenchantment with OpenAI’s shift towards a profit-driven model after the creation of a for-profit arm in 2019. This departure from the organization’s original mission, which aimed to create artificial general intelligence (AGI) designed to benefit humanity, was a critical point of contention for Musk.

In a now-famous lawsuit filed in March 2024, Musk accused OpenAI of prioritizing profit maximization, particularly benefiting major investor Microsoft, over its founding principles. Despite dropping his lawsuit last year, the conflict persisted, leading to a counter-suit from OpenAI in April, accusing Musk of bad-faith actions that allegedly hindered the company’s progress in AI development.

The feud culminated in attempts by Musk to acquire OpenAI. His unsolicited $100 billion offer was formally rejected by the company’s board, further complicating their relationship. This climate of distrust is indicative of the broader challenges posed by the rapid evolution of AI technology, where motivations and ethical concerns frequently clash amidst fierce competition among industry leaders.

In summary, the conflict between Elon Musk and Sam Altman further exemplifies the growing pains of the AI industry, with both personal and professional stakes intertwined. Their dispute not only highlights key issues regarding the future direction of artificial intelligence but also the complex dynamics of competition among technology titans. As the situation develops, observers from both the business world and beyond will be keenly watching to see how this strategic struggle for dominance in the AI landscape unfolds.
