NewJeans Leaves Agency Amid Harassment Claims and Contract Dispute

The K-Pop sensation, NewJeans, has recently made headlines following a significant announcement regarding their split from their managing agency, Ador, which is a subsidiary of Hybe—a notable powerhouse in the South Korean entertainment industry. The girl group, known for its chart-topping hits and vibrant appeal, has alleged mistreatment and manipulation from their agency, leading to their decision to part ways.

During a press conference that took place late on Thursday evening, the five-member band, comprising Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, expressed their grievances against Ador. They suggested that the working conditions have been detrimental not only to them but also to their supporting staff. In their statements, they cited incidents of harassment and intimidation that they have endured while being under the agency’s management. Hanni highlighted experiences of workplace harassment that she claims to have faced, stating, “This is not the type of work ethic we respect and not one we want to be a part of,” emphasizing the necessity of a safe and supportive work environment.

In contrast, Ador has firmly refuted the claims made by NewJeans, asserting that their contract remains valid and intact, as they did not breach any terms. The agency voiced disappointment at the abrupt nature of the public announcement, suggesting it would have preferred a more considered approach to the situation. They stressed that a unilateral declaration of trust being broken does not constitute adequate grounds for terminating a contract, and they wish for the group to continue its activities under their management. This disagreement points towards a deeper rift within the K-Pop scene, particularly given the historical context between former producer Min Hee-Jin and Hybe chairman Bang Si-hyuk, which has allegedly fueled a long-standing rivalry overshadowing the group’s artistic direction and future.

The troubles NewJeans faces extend beyond a mere professional disagreement, as they have purportedly filed legal notices demanding resolution of breaches regarding their contracts within two weeks. If these demands are not met, they have indicated that they will proceed to terminate their contracts. This legal aspect adds layers of complexity to their situation, raising questions about the financial and reputational consequences for both the group and Ador. Reports suggest that if NewJeans were to breach their contract prematurely, they could potentially owe an eye-watering sum of approximately 300 billion South Korean Won, roughly translating to £170 million. However, the members remain adamant that they have not acted unlawfully and that any missteps lie with the agency itself.

NewJeans debuted in 2022 and quickly ascended the ranks to become one of Hybe’s most successful acts, likened to global sensations like BTS. Their music, characterized by catchy melodies and strong choreography, has garnered them millions of fans worldwide. In light of this, fans are now bracing for potential shifts in their beloved group’s brand and identity as the ongoing drama unfolds. During the press conference, the group warned supporters that they might lose the right to use the ‘NewJeans’ name should their contracts be terminated.

In recent months, the K-Pop industry, including Hybe and its subsidiaries, has seen increasing scrutiny over artist welfare and labor practices—especially when internal conflicts emerge that could taint reputations. In a notable previous instance, Hanni had testified to the Labour Committee in South Korea’s National Assembly, passionately advocating for better treatment of artists within such agencies and alleging systematic undermining by upper management.

As the situation develops, the public’s attention remains fixed on NewJeans—and the K-Pop industry as a whole—and how these disputes may reshape the landscape of K-Pop amidst a growing demand for reforms focused on artist rights and mental health. The potential legal battles ahead will likely determine the future of NewJeans and possibly lead to broader implications for K-Pop contracts and the treatment of idols within the industry. As fans await further developments, the fallout from this controversy will be felt both on the charts and beyond.
