Paddy Power and Betfair Customers on High Alert After Major Data Breach Exposes Personal Information

**Paddy Power and Betfair Users Warned After Data Breach Incident**

On July 14, 2025, an alarming warning was issued to users of Paddy Power and Betfair, two prominent online gambling platforms owned by Flutter Entertainment. Following a significant data breach affecting approximately 800,000 customers, the company has urged users to remain vigilant against potential threats. This incident underscores growing concerns about data security and privacy, especially in industries that handle sensitive personal information.

The breach was confirmed by a spokesperson from Flutter Entertainment, who informed BBC reporters that the company “suffered a data incident.” As a result of this breach, sensitive data, including IP addresses, email addresses, and details concerning users’ online activity, was compromised. While the company assured affected users that there was nothing immediate they needed to do, it nevertheless emphasized the importance of remaining observant for any suspicious activity or communications.

Flutter Entertainment currently boasts an impressive monthly player base of 4.2 million across its various brands, which in addition to Paddy Power and Betfair, include betting companies such as Sky Bet and Tombola. Following the breach, Flutter Entertainment announced that the situation had been contained, assuring customers that no passwords, identification documents, or payment details were impacted during the incident.

Despite the reassurances provided by Flutter Entertainment, cybersecurity experts have warned that the compromised data may be exploited for spear phishing attacks, wherein cybercriminals craft convincing emails to deceive unsuspecting recipients. Harley Morlet, the Chief Marketing Officer at Storm Guidance, remarked on the growing accessibility of artificial intelligence tools that can facilitate large-scale automated attacks, manipulating messages to appeal to gamblers based on their betting habits.

Tim Rawlins, a director and senior adviser at the internationally recognized security firm NCC Group, further elaborated on this issue during an interview on the BBC’s “Wake Up to Money” program. He cautioned customers to remain vigilant for emails that could reference their betting activities, prompt clicking on dubious links, or solicit sensitive financial information. “You might be asked to re-enter your credit card number or bank account details. These are the types of schemes customers need to guard against. If an offer seems too good to be true, it’s often a scam artist attempting to access your funds,” he warned.

The rising sophistication of phishing attempts has been alarming to cybersecurity professionals, with many noting that distinguishing between legitimate and fraudulent emails is becoming increasingly difficult. Rawlins conveyed that his firm has observed a marked increase in the quality of phishing emails, largely due to advancements in artificial intelligence which make fraudulent communications more convincing than ever.

In light of the breach, Flutter Entertainment has proactively equipped affected users with essential online safety information while concluding that while there is no urgent response required from them, heightened vigilance is advisable. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present risks associated with online data security, particularly in the high-stakes environment of online betting and gambling.

The warning serves not only those involved with Paddy Power and Betfair but the wider online community as well, underscoring the critical need for vigilance and skepticism regarding unsolicited communications, particularly in the wake of data breaches. As we increasingly navigate our lives online, understanding the nature of data security and the potential risks attached to it remains essential for all internet users.
